Nah. He ran as fast as he needed to.
So he didn't "need to" ran faster than Cierpinski in Montreal.

I don't know about you guys but I've had my best runs after drinking 3-5 beers the night before. I usually run around 6pm the next day, but for some reason I feel great. Now if I do this 2 or 3 times a week, I get sluggish because your sleep and hydration and other stuff can get out of wack. Once a week should be fine and a beer a night probably nothing to worry about at all.
Yeah I can actually attest to this...I've gotten drunk on a few nights and then I've felt amazing on a solid run the next day. I'm not sure why or how that works, but I certainly haven't seen it negatively affect it really. I mean I tend to drink a lot of water before I go to sleep if I'm drinking too, but I also have a really high tolerance to alcohol given that being a runner entails a ridiculously fast metabolism (which is why I can also eat more than most people haha).

Are you guys kidding? You're probably kidding/trolling. A glass or two of wine or beer per night is not going to alter your running performance at all. These articles are about the effects of "heavy" drinking and/or drug use. So yeah, avoid regular bouts of serious binge drinking and drug use by all means, but a glass of wine per day is not going to impact you at all. And, no, you don't need to check into rehab. This thread has generated a lot of hysteria or trolling, can't tell which.
One is better off smoking a little weed in the evenings than drinking alcohol. Weed = no extra calories, no hangovers and puts one in a relaxed state for recovery.
A drink or two and you're fine.
Getting drunk messes up your training and slows you down.
I improved from a 4:30 mile to 4:21 in my first 3 months at University.
I only improved to 4:18 by the end, as I basically majored in the party life. You get the picture.
Guys I was beating freshman year were running 4:10 as I camped out in the campus bar!
I find that the day after a moderate binge (20+ drinks) my average heartrate increases by a good 5 - 10 bpm on my run.
It would have been nice had it happened on that day but that wasn't what you originally posted. He was already coming apart physically that day. Even if he had managed a sub 2:10 the odds are it would have been in another race. Compare his career to the first two sub 2:10 guys, neither of whom has any Olympic hardware. With the exception of one marathon, Shorter ran as fast as he needed to and when he was physically whole he always did.

if you're only a semi-serious runner, a glass of wine or beer a few times a week won't impact you too much. You won't be at your full potential, but you'll still be close.
This must be a joke.
Have you ever consumed alcohol?
Alysia Montano is doing OK.

Nick Symmonds, too. Read his 2011-12 training log.
