Great to see a 5000m race that didn't dawdle and got to the bell under (just under) 12:00. Too bad Rupp and the others couldn't handle sub 13 pace. I'd still bet that Rupp could have run a very good 10k today. Maybe his training/fatigue just have not put his legs in shape to handle low 60s/lap. My bet is that he will lose to Kipsang in the 10 miler but run a fast time, because he can certainly handle running close to 4:30 per mile for ten if not too tired in advance. Congrats to Hill on his breakthrough. We saw that Kejelcha had around 26 close in a 12:53, enough to beat Hagos, and so surely can run high 12:40s this year. If Mo had been in the race, probably he would have jumped into the lead and slowed the pace, but it would have been good to see him make an attempt at a fast 5k for the first time since 2011.

Agreed. This thread is pathetic. Some of you guys can't accept Rupp for anything he does. In fact you sit in wait in the dark ready to jump on every perceived "failure". I'm pretty sure that both True and Hill grudgingly accept this as little more than a roadkill win over Rupp. Rupp got after it and put his balls on the line. Neither True nor Hill did that -- not today or at the Worlds.

More pathetic are the fanboys who make excuses that only Rupp can take advantage of. Every other runner in the race is not allowed to make any excuses.
Rupp did not "go after it" today. Rupp never led. He sat behind two front runners, and was waiting to launch his kick. Did you watch the race, malmo?

I think its his kids/wife that are having a negative effect on his performances. Staying up late nights, getting sick more frequently, etc... all those take a toll on you. There's no way he's getting off easy with kids in the house. That takes energy out of you. I bet he's a good dad and does everything.
When Farah is off training in Kenya for many months - his kids and wife are not there.
I agree with another poster....if he wasn't going for the AR he could have gone sub 13...perhaps finish somewhere near Iguider. But - what's the point? Go big or go home.

Disagree, Rupp has always been immensely more competitive in the 10k compared to 5k. I think he will fair well in the 10mile. His speed isn't exceptional, his strength gets him he is.
Salazar trains his guys to be near 80% fitness, then peak for races when need be. No question rupp will be fit if he is going to race.

Didn't Rupp defeat both Hill and True at the World Championships 5000m Final after placing 4th in the 10,000m and then running a heat of the 5000m? And today he was only :03 back of True and Hill?
Sounds like competition to me. What, you want Rupp to be Superman and never lose?
Rupp will race the 10M, and then line up at the Trials in LA2016.

Are you going to tell me that an Olympic Silver, 10k world lead in 2014, two fifth places at worlds, and numerous other feats, would get no name recognition if he was kenyan. I understand that he gets more press for being a white American, but I hate to tell you this, but there aren't any kenyans who have run the 10k as fast as him in the last few years. He's worth ever so slightly more than he is made out to be worth.

True and Hill ran incredible races. It's a marvel to see multiple US guys holding steady in a race this competitive. Having said this, both of these athletes would readily acknowledge that their strong showing was not the reason for besting Rupp but that he was running in an entirely different race before fading, to a 13:08. Same scenario played out in the steeple at worlds and Huling spelled it out for viewers in the interview afterward. I think we all get it, dudes don't care for Rupp. Which is too bad really seeing as he's the most talented American distance runner we've ever seen.

Back in 2012 it looked like Rupp was developing into a guy that would compete for medals consistently, especially in light of that 13:2x race where he closed in 52 to beat Lagat. He had some of that the Olympics too, but since then has not rediscovered that ability to accelerate and finish in 52-54 which you MUST do to medal at championships. Whether those two races were incredible flukes, or a result of what he was doing in training I can't say, but three years removed from showing a semblance of final lap ability required to medal it's hard to envision that speed re manifesting itself.
I do think he can still challenge 26:40 and possibly the AR in the 5,000m, but when it comes to medaling it doesn't seem possible. It's been three years since he briefly found, then promptly lost, his approaching world class closing speed.
Interesting how when Magness leaves, they lose their kick...
