Yes, and she looked PISSED while doing it.

Molly made a mistake, simple as that. She will crush many competitors in the future as she's far from done. What would have been worse is if she had let up the same way in the Olympic finals...always look at the bright side:) She's an animal and it will only make her stronger.

"I think we were all tired coming down that stretch," said Ward, 26, who won the U.S. Marathon championship in 2:12:55 at the Los Angeles Marathon in March. "It was hot today."Jared Ward was actually in the race, and he thought it was hot. Alas. And as for "thin skin," you're a nudge, pushing here and there, and then when called on it you accuse the other. Or maybe your sense of mannerly conversation is in need of a refresher course. But for the last time--I NEVER SAID IT WAS HOT!!! I said the conditions weren't great.
malmo wrote:
Thin skin much? I asked you a simple question "have you ever competed before" because it was obvious to me you lacked much experience since you think that 70 degrees is hot for a 20k.
Jared Ward is the deadliest pistol they say since Wild Bill himself.
I remember when Malmo was arguing here a few years ago that Boston 1982 was not hot either. http://www.letsrun.com/forum/flat_read.php?thread=2330882
Thanks for your link to the thread as I posted on that and will post on this, but I'm sure it'll be deleted. Here's what I just posted before it goes bye bye.Yeah, I ran as a 19 year old, believe it or not. Sorry George, you are wrong as it was hot. I came from the cold and snow and it made it seem even hotter than it was. I too baked in the sun and had a sun burn the next morning. I also spoke with Dick Beardsley the next morning in the hotel as he was standing by himself reading the results in the paper. He too said it was hot. It was NOT chilly for the first half, I was running in it, you were standing somewhere. Please, you're probably a nice guy, son, neighbor, brother, etc..but you're wrong on this one.

p.s. At 7am, there may have been a "slight, very "slight" chill in the air, but not when we ran. I baked pal and I was only 19 years old, so I can imagine how someone older felt.
I ran the race, or at least most of it. I remember a hot, drying sun. The kind of day when the salt perspiration just cakes up on your face.
There is very little shade on the course and it felt like a desert.
I dropped at 21 miles my entire bodywas one big cramp. I believe I was in 7th place at the time.
And I was pretty badly sunburned the next day. That's what happens to a New Englander that first exposure to the sun in months!!

The above is what Bob Hodge said in the thread. Sorry George, that's exactly what happened to me. I went back with a sunburn. You forget that the slight breeze was at our backs, which made it worse. It was a dry hot sun, period. Are you ever wrong?
Sorry that you hijacked this thread obsessive guy. You can check the hour by hour conditions on April 19, 1982. It was cool, dry and sunny with the high of the day 70 long after you finished.
That day was a classic example of what an overhead sun does as opposed to early morning race conditions. Also the light tailwind hurt you rather than helped you.
I understand the overhead sun part, but how come a light tailwind hurts you?
The air is moving in the same direction as you making it more difficult to exchange internal heat.
Anything above 55 is starting to get quite hot for me to run a 20km. It all depends
Heat xchange wrote:

Like running on a treadmill in a hot room. Takes more energy to dissipate heat than overcome air resistance.
No disrespect, but...
It is attitudes like these that give us the results that the U.S. had at WC.
If it above 62 it is hot, gimme a break.
Try working out in SoCal during the summer, or maybe Tempe, Ariz.
I would love to get to run in temps under 80 again.

I can tell you. That was a 71 y.o. but she was finishing the 5k. Ordinarily, that is caught and she is not put on the 20k list, but...

Actually, that's not too bad when you're 20ish and fit. Back in the good old days, I don't recall ever really being blown out by the heat in summer races in the south, although I was usually running 10-15k.
Thirty years later, I prefer the temperature to be more like 52.

Too hot?
What do you whiners suggest happen?
Use another race?
Do you think 20k's are lining up to fork over $44,000?
How many major 20k's do you know of?
How many 20k's overall do you know of?
This field was only less than an OT. Nothing else.
The organizers can't control the temperature.
Also, if you look, you will see this race had several years at cool and low humidity.
For me, this year was fine. The humidity was not a problem. I didn't hear any top runner complaining about the heat or humidity.
Wah wah. Football players play in that heat with helmets on their heads and covered in pads.
I don't know what more you guys want. A flat and fast course with serious prize money and the men's and women's fields were one of the best I have seen that are not on TV in NYC where many top runners got $$ for showing up.
Applaud the race. Applaud the effort by Jared and Molly. And for once, quit whining.
