this is on point. if i recall, top 400/400h guys like bershawn jackson, merritt, and dos santos have all ran early season 800s and they were much slower than 1:53. in this context i think the result is actually a good sign.

You guys are idiots.
1:53 flat for first 800m ever and winning the meet is not a bad start.
I remember an aussie 400m runner who had just run 44.5 400m the week before stepped into an 800m and ran 1:53. So wariner could conceivably be in great shape.
Had he been in with a group of 1:50 guys taking him through 400m in 52 he would have run 150.
Anyone who is actually an 800m runner knows it is a good result. It's actually a very good result if he is using it as strength training for the 400m (as the commentator said)
Bit of a different story if he is training specifically for 800m.
Although the field was weak and it was his first ever! He had no clue how to run it and had tons in the tank at the end.
Again. he is definitely in sub 150 shape with sound race tactics and faster guys to race. Not to shabby for early season first 800m EVER.

When Farah and Rupp run to win it is a sign of what smart runners they are. Wariner runs to win and he is DONE!
Appreciate the poster above linking to the video. After watching that, he could have easily run 150-151. Not as slow as first glance. Announcers said his team had put out that he was gunning for 1:54 so it may have just been a controlled first 400 at 55sec by design. Woulda been cooler if he was just wheeling it on full throttle.

So why didn't he run the 1:50-51 that you are taking about? 55 is on pace for that.
Rudisha has run a 49.28 opening lap. He was on pace to sub 1:38.6. why did he fail to break 1:39, and even 1:40?
Not only do you vault him to 1:50 status, you then buffoon him to sub-1:50.
Based on a 1:53
I'll believe it when I see it.
I'm not saying it isn't possible, what I'm saying is that you are FOS, fanboi.
Let's hear it for Manzano, who just went 1:46.6, also in not his main event.

JW showed you LR fools that he's a pro, and you're not. That was a solid first 800m. After a quick first 200m, he ran pretty much even; the pack went past him too early, and he took off with 150m to go and ran to win.
I wouldn't be surprised if he's thinking about trying for the 800 team in 2016.

Not all questions are stupid but yours is dangerously close. Link to video can be found right here on this page, you could maybe watch the race and make that determination yourself.
I am going to say 1:50, perhaps he can get down to 1:47 after a couple of
them.
I have watched it, and I agree, he could have gone faster. My educated guess would be around 1:50 with better pacing, maybe actually a bit faster.
Pretty impressive. He should forget the 400, I agree he is finished in that event. All he needs is a good training group, and he's 1:47 in a month or two, then 1:45-1:46
Not world-beating, but a very encouraging start that would be.
Watch his post race interview.
He was struggling mentally and/or physically by 500m into the race. He came back to life with @ 150m to go.
Physically I suspect he was capable of 1:51 hard to run to your capability in your first 800m when you are a sprinter.
wow hahaha! he slows down to a near jog to let the last of the guys who pass him on the backstretch go by at 600m, then glances over his shoulder to make sure doesn't cut anyone off & hops out into lane 2. proceeds to pass back the nearly the entire field in lane 2 from 150 out, looking smooth the whole way in. that was not a guy racing/time-trialing for a fast time. it was a workout, and he made 1:53 look pretty easy. on one hand he may not have the 200m speed of guys like James or Merritt anymore. but i seriously doubt those guys have the strength to do something similar to this at 800m right now. i am excited to see JW in the 400m now.

I was thinking he would go 1:50 based on the assumption he had been training for the 800, but it looked like a season opener for a 400m runner. 1:53 for someone who is a true sprinter 200/400 type shows that he is healthy and in shape. Btw, there is no way he could have more than a minute faster because he looked exhausted at the end. If he ran a couple more and with some specific 800m training he could get down to 1:50 shape, but he's certainly not in that type of shape now and it doesn't appear he can transition to the 800.

I totally agree. I was pretty tired. I definitely could not have gone more than a minute faster. I think I could've hit about 0:53, but that's it!
Here's his postrace video. Is he from Texas or Arkansas with that accent? Jeez. http://www.flotrack.org/coverage/252196-Bobcat-Invitational-2015/video/765311-Jeremy-Wariner-after-first-800#
In the time it took you to write that.
Went to hs in Arlington TX. 3 Olympic golds, Olympic silver, 5 WC golds.
I don't dispute he's an awesome talent (I actually have his autograph from a Pre meet) but his accent sounds like an old Arkansas hillbilly. Maybe too much whisky.
What was he wearing?
