6 mile in 28:55 10 minutes interval and another 6 mile in 28:51 (they were both supposed to be in 29 min)
We did one like that in college. Not MY hardest since I couldn't handle it, but definately the sickest. 200s at 5k race pace, so 35 seconds or so(we started in the middle of the track and jogged across the infield to recover). How many? As many as we could (everyone had to do at least 30 , but we all did way more), until everyone "dropped out" and there was only one guy left.... sick.
Hardest session i ever managed was a session of 5 sets of 21 times 400m at marathon pace with 0sec recovery between intervals and 0sec recovery between sets. i managed about 80sec per quarter.
Nothing prepares you for a marathon like it.

You're a Duck?
Zatopek, I am not saying they were all fast. But we would regularly do 4 sets of 16 with a lap jog between sets. He had to make a phone call and it was a long discussion. Back then running a 200 in 35 and having 25 to recover was no big deal. The lap jog between sets of 16 was a nice break. Maybe that is why my school was always good at XC. Now for the real kicker, all our intervals were run on an inside lane of wood chips. Our legs never really got too torn up from pavment.
Hey...
I watched a hard workout once....
200 - 30
400 - 60
800 - 2:00
1200 - 3:00
mile - 4:00
1200 - 3:00
800 - 2:00
400 - 1:00
200 - :30
Talk about a tough ladder workout...I was pretty good when I saw this, 4:07 mile, but that's just sick. The guy beat my ass in the middle of a workout.
Is it really the man "Big Dave'?
Like I said thousands of years ago, thinking about this further Zatopek was slightly correct. We did do a lap jog between sets of 16. So every 16 or so minutes we joggged a lap in around 3 minutes. So we had 18 minutes of no 200's in that 90 minutes. So maybe we only did 70-72 200's. Still it was a hard workout.
While my times were nowhere near blazing, 10-X-1 mile, on an indoor track where 6-1/2 laps = 1 mile + 1.5 w/u & c/d was not a lot of fun.
MY GOD the level of BS in here is horrid. I fail to even see the logic in most of these "work outs."
I guess the toughest I remember is 12x400 at 2 sc. faster than 5k race pace, .60 rest. But through the years I've done some plain ol' crazy stuff.
But in order to compete in here I'll say:
5 mile warm up
25 x 1mile in 4:10-4:15, 30 sec. rest
5 mile cool down
AND THAT'S JUST THE MORNING SESSION!!!
365 X 24 hours @ 300,000 kilometers per second pace with no recovery.
In High School..........
21 x 400 @ 75 w/ 100m jog rest.
I had teammates with me that would were cycling through running with me. They all ran about 200m and dropped out. I was suppose to do 25 but it was freakin cold and raining the whole time. I just blacked out after about 12 and I dont remember much more of it, except that it hurt.
Keeping in mind the hardest workout ive done before this was maybe a couple times by 800.
12x 1 mile repeat at Hollisters. For those who know, nothing else needs to be said. I shat blood.
Something in high school we used to do for "Nuts Week" was 100 x 100 meters with 100M walk in between. This was done as a team unity sort of thing and at least everyone on the team (even the very slow kids) had to win at least 2 of the 100's. That was a rough workout. And my legs cramped up afterward. We literally had to start at 5:30 in the morning and would be done by like 9. Oh, and if someone got lapped by the main pack, we would haze them so much they would quit.
3 mile warm up
25 quarters at 70s or less, last one in 60, with 60 sec rests between quarters
10 100s
3 mile cool down
5xmile with 400 rest in 4:55
20x400 with 200 rest in 69

I hope Stephen Hawking knows how to use a FinishLynx timing system. I did a similar workout when I was in High School, but the pace was just a little bit faster so I finished before I even started. Better yet, once I flew around the world so fast that time reversed so I could save Lois Lane. The downside of all this is that I have a three-inch penis.
I once ran 20 quarters in around 67sec. with 40sec rest on the first 10 and then 1min rest on the last 10. Puked at number 17 but went on and finished because i was so close to 20. I didnt recover from that workout for a good 2 1/2 weeks.
6x3k steeple in 9:00 with 10 seconds rest.
On the same ladder theory.
I came up with this but have not finished on 3 tries.
It uses goal paces and % to come up with times (this is an example of goal paces for 800-2:10 1600-4:50 3200-10:25) the rest periods are set no matter the pace
400-82.5% of 800 gp (1:18.8) rest 1:30
600-87.5% of 800 gp (1:51.4) rest 1:45
800-82.5% of 800 gp (2:37.6) rest 2:00
1000-87.5% of 1600 gp (3:27.1) rest 2:15
1200-82.5% of 1600 gp (4:23.6) rest 2:30
1600-87.5% of 3200 gp (5:57.1) rest 3:00
1200-82.5% of 1600 gp (4:23.6) rest 2:30
1000-87.5% of 1600 gp (3:27.1) rest 2:15
800-82.5% of 800 gp (2:37.6) rest 2:00
600-87.5% of 800 gp (1:51.4) rest 1:45
400-82.5% of 800 gp (1:18.8)
I call it the suicide ladder if anybody is crazy enough to do this and finish; start a tread, please.
