Regarding Balboa - why the suspicion? Other than Int. Prep in Chicago or Golden West very late in the season, in that era kids didn't travel all over the country to face each other, so the track season did not produce the crazy depth races of the last decade. The only place most of the top distance guys met was at Balboa in cross. Reina was a total stud, multiple NCAA champ, and he beat a great field. Marc Davis almost got the record the next year, was the American record holder in the two-mile and took down Khalid Skah, the Olympic champ in the 10K. The next year was Bob Kennedy, the first American under 13:00.
The dilution caused by Nike Team means less depth at Foot Locker, and for whatever reason the guys in the last few years don't take it out fast. Chris Solinsky ran 14:40 in 2002 and won by over 20 seconds.
I also suspect that Ritz would have the course record if not for the Orlando switch in that era.
