What is the fire situation?
I think that Willis' tweet was very tame, but it was still a public way of basically saying, "I want to race you, and I want to win." Mentioning the post-race workouts wasn't a big deal to me, but if I were Rupp I would want to leave him in my dust then do a post race workout and interview for Flotrack and be like, "watchu talkin' bout Willis!?"
The forecast calls for moderate air quality. The track is at just over the border between #8 and #15 on the map above.
The heat is due to the Santa Ana winds, which blow hot desert air into the LA area and LA's air pollution out to sea.
Just finished a run on the Westside. The warm, dry winds are worse than the temp. Gotta be twice as bad closer to the Mountains, like Oxy is. Two things are guaranteed: slow times and Rupp's face mask.
The temp should be fine after sunset, and you don't need a face mask for dryness.
And them muzzies too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Anyone down at that area that can tell us if the So-Cal fires are affecting the air? If so I would bet NOP pulls out, and wouldn't blame them. I would expect others too as well.

Much lower overall quality than prior years. Yes you have a handful of elites rest of these though are b players. Heat could be a major factor although the track is closer to the ocean and it won't be as hot as the rest of LA.

The track is closer to the ocean compared to What? In reality, the track is very close to the hot San Gabriel Valley. The track is closer to scorching hot Encino than the Ocean. Locals will never say that Oxy is closer to the ocean. The reality is this. The 2014 version of the High Performance Track Meet will be a disappointment because of the hot weather. It doesn't matter when you start this meet. It sucks, but its reality!
Its been scorching hot in southern CA, though it is supposed to cool down to low 90s on Friday.

No, the SoCal fires are pretty far away; they're much closer to San Diego than LA and aren't affecting air quality in LA. Air quality will be moderate tonight. I expect the heat to have a much larger effect than the moderate air quality.
The weather is the weather. Last time I checked track and field is an outdoor sport. I hope no sissy athletes scratch due to weather. The athletes already make the sport weak, we don't need to give fans another reason to think the sport is boring and unpredictable.
It will be hot. May not have fast times, but it will be tacticle which I love.
Hot conditions make for good preparations for the USATF champs in Sacramento in June
It will be hot there too and the meet will be run mid day in the blazing sun to accommodate TV air time
Not one mention of Bobby Curtis in here? He went 27:46 a couple of weeks ago, not far off his PB of 27:24 (still early in the year). He's capable of being in the mix (13:18 5k best).
One fire is in SB County, about 40 miles away from Oxy. Large SD fires have made even coastal LA un-runnable in the past, but these aren't as big, thankfully. Considering soot from Chinese factories ends in west coast air, I wouldn't call SD so far away...
Since it's not a championship year, the races were likely to have been tactical regardless of weather.

I'm looking forward to this too.
Yes the last few nights it has stayed in the 90s until about 11 PM. Plus the air is dry and wind has been a bit of a problem. Look for a bunch of really fast guys running 13:30s
Is the men's 5k really going off at 6:40pm?
It's scheduled for 10:40.
