So much for "instincts." (and once again, so much for your input)

If by "what people know about nutrition" you mean:
* Fad paleo nonsense
* Gary Taubes BS
* Neo-Atkins diet "knowledge"
Yes, a lot more is "known".

They eat that crap because they can't afford anything better. Fresh meat is expensive.
And you're as much a jerk as ever. I thought hippies were supposed to be mellow.

Pig fat is not good but it is better than cow fat. The meat is also different.

Which are you going to serve at the big feast? Will the people gather around, mouths watering, as you mash the peanuts into butter? Or as you roast the juicy fat pig over an open fire?
Thus has it been for hundreds of thousands of years. People know by instinct what is good for them. Peanuts are for when there is no meat available.
Meat has been a luxury for hundreads of thousands of ears. If you start eating it everyday you'll get atherosclerosis, a higher cancer risk and a recuded lifespan.

but there is a discussion. sorry, it ain't, as you said "so cut and dry."

No "so what?". Generally it's a problem.

True.

Expense is not the only reason. knowledge, laziness, availability and motivation are other factors, and you know it.

Coming from you? seriously?
Bad Wigins wrote: I thought hippies were supposed to be mellow.
Oh right, I'm a "hippie" because I don't think people should follow paleo-blog bro-science when eating, and... what else? I'm a democrat who hates the NRA? If that makes me a "hippie", so be it. Though I think the description you are looking for is: well-educated, non-red neck, non x-fit-poseur. Yup, that's me.

Yes, there are a lot of thin and healthy rice eaters in Asia. Dirt poor. Healthy diet is cheap.
I really wish nutrition wasn't such a soft science.
Paleo is a good starting off point with ideas like cutting out processed foods, staying moderately active throughout the entire day, and paying attention to your body (which starts morphing into the potentially neurotic biohack scene).
The things we can agree on:
- Eat a shit-ton of vegetables with a wide variety of colors.
- Eat some fruit with a wide variety of colors.
- Intake of starchy vegetables depends on your activity level.
- Eat a variety of nuts and seeds in moderation.
- Use an elimination diet to test if you are ACTUALLY intolerant to dairy and wheat. If you feel better without them, cut them out.
- Get about 1g per body kg of protein (more for certain illnesses) from BIOAVAILABLE sources. Sorry vegans, ingesting a certain amount of animal corpses is what us opportunistic humans evolved to do.
- Keep your potassium/sodium ratio healthy.
Fat is were things get sketchy and people are diametrically opposed. I think you're fine if you:
- Keep total fat intake at 40% of your total diet.
- Keep saturated fat intake at 10% of your total diet.
- Make a conscious point to get a little more omega 3 and a little less omega 6.
- Get more omega 9.
- Don't worry about dietary cholesterol intake. If your diet is full of nutrient dense food and soluble fiber it just is not a big deal.
Is peanut butter healthy? Meh, I say it's neutral. There are better things you could be eating. Eat an ounce of almonds and shove some broccoli up your butt. Smoke some crack that you've been storing in your fanny pack. Whatever.

Except you're both wrong. Depends on the brand/source. The peanut butter I eat has ZERO trans fats.

If your village is composed of mostly Muslims, people are going to be gathering around the peanuts, not the pig. Same with Jews. I with no religious prohibitions would prefer the peanuts. I don't know what you think, but village feasts aren't giant luaus like you see on vacation in Hawaii. Many people would prefer the peanuts. Peanut butter is quite good. Please grow some tolerance; you are very insensitive.
Oh and when you go to a farm or farmers market are the farmers selling pigs? Not very often. Do they have delicious homemade peanut butter? Probably. Lots of people like peanuts and would eat pb even if a giant trex walked into their camp and died of old age, with a dying wish to be eaten.

Will make many people fat and raise their cholesterol levels. Less than 20% fat is better.

Same goes with all calorie sources, not just starch/carbs. It's hard to gain weight eating starch if it's low in fat.

I don't pay a lot of attention to my diet or blood work numbers but I thought I'd through this out there. I recently figured out I was lactose intolerant so I've changed my breakfast from milk and cereal to 2 eggs cooked in coconut oil with a green smoothie(a leafy green, cumber, celery and a handful of frozen fruit). For lunch I have been eating a salad with a whole avocado and 2 tables spoons of olive oil. I used to eat a chicken breast sandwich with mustard for lunch. Dinner is usually pasta or a lean meat with vegetable, I haven't made any changes in what I have for dinner. For snacks I've added a serving a nuts a day, and add sardines to my lunch salad a couple times a week. I have added a lot of fat to my diet and my cholesterol numbers have gone from 50hdl 100ldl to 83hdl 88ldl. I have also obviously increased my vegetable intake but I expect it is a combination of the 2 that has lead to my cholesterol numbers improving.

Person A
2300 kcal/day
Carbs:60% Protein:20% Fat:20%(sat fat 6%)
Person B
2300 kcal/day
Carbs:40% Protein:20% Fat:40%(sat fat 10%)
Both people exercise in moderation 4 times per week, but are not athletes. Both people eat a nutrient rich high fiber diet of whole foods.
Please explain why person B will get more fat than person A.

As for peanut butter, I prefer almond butter. :)
Many years ago I dated a girl who had been a hippy and was into ultra-healthy eating, involving sprouted foods and macrobiotics and so forth. She made an interesting point that stuff like pb and other shelled nuts were ultimately unhealthy because people are more likely to eat larger portions than they would if the nuts were still in the shells due to how labor and time intensive the shelling process is.
