1984
martin/babcock/hudson all ran for north hunterdon. ok, brad had traveled out to oregon to finish high school, but you get the picture.
True, but I couldn't find anything on his college track performances. Given his talent, I think he could have focused on the mile and still cranked out some decent cross times, like other high school superstars (e.g., Donald Sage). Furthermore, his mile times couldn't have been all that spectacular if he is running 32+ for 10k.
That girl has the worst anny hair (resulting from anorexia), I've ever seen. I assume she was fried out shortly after high school?
Where is Nate Miller from New Jersey, 98 footlocker...he went to Stanford then Villanova and now?
How about Maurd Campbell?
Going further back to answer someone's question about Nick Larosa he went to VT and got the boot for partying to much and ended up at Manhattan.
Bob Keino who beat Larosa that year at VCP went to Arizona, then I don't know where he went, I think I read somewhere that he went to Rutgers, but that doesn't make much sence why would any decent runner from NEw Jersey, who knows better go there?
30th place as a senior in 1983 was Mark Coogan. Guess he improved a little.
Jay Marden is a principal at an elementary school in Big Sur, CA.
Chas Alexander works for a tech firm in NoCal and is race director for Shoreline XC meet and a member of God's own club, the Aggie Running Club who hosted the Nat'l Club champs in Rocklin, CA.

The mullet is sweet, but good lord, check out the anorexic standing next to him! Wonder what happened to her? BTW kids, for those of you who don't think it's possible to spot an anorexic female based on pictures alone, check out her rail-thin yet well-defined arms (you can see each muscle, what muscle there is) and the HAIR on those things, it's a dead giveaway.
Jay Marden Mission San Jose H.S.Fremont Ca. Won Kinney Natls,in 1980 in 14:53 8:51 3200m runner that spring at state meet. Went on to run at Cal,running about 13:42 3:43.Ran 28:00 flat at MtSac. fastest American that year.Fell ill to heat at Olympic trials in Indy.Tough runner fastest Bay Area born 10k Alltime currently principal in Carmel Valley.
The female next to Reina is indeed Erin Keough, one of the best high school XC females ever. She is from Virginia. At the South Regional she ran something insane. Something in the 16:30 range is what I remember. Can anyone help with that time? I had never before seen such a good field nowhere in sight for quite sometime after she finished. She buried a high quality field. Wendy Neely also of Virginia was 2nd. Does anyone know what became of Wendy. I recrutied Erin, with virtually no chance of getting her however, until meeting her and talking with her hs coach. She was indeed an excessive compulsive. In addition to the eating disorder problems, she would go home after hard interval practices of 7-8 miles and go burn 10 milers later in the evening on a regular basis. Her coach tried to help her, but with little success. Other area coaches was my source for this info.
Jay Marden went to Cal Poly his frosh year, but transferred and was an old teammate at Cal who buried the rest of us on a daily basis. His PRs were 28:00 at 1988 Mt. SAC, 13:38 for 5,000-meters in 1987 or '88, and 3:42 for 1,500. He once ran a monster double 14:04 5,000 and 3:42.7 1,500 at the Cal-UCLA dual meet in 1984.
I think Jay still holds the all-time U.S. high school >>>sophomore<<< record in the 3,200-meters at Mission HS in Fremont, Calif., when he busted an 8:55 (1979-80?). Jay also led the 1988 U.S. Olympic Trials 10,000-meters with 600 to go and passed out in the 90-plus temperatures and 90-plus humidity of Indianapolis. At the hospital, with IVs in his arms, Jay came back to consciousness, and the first question he asked was: "Did I miss the 5,000?"
His brother Jack Marden was more of a 30- to 31-minute 10K runner at Cal Poly. Jay does now live in Big Sur with wife Suzanne, he's a school principal, and is an advisor to or PT guest-speaker for the Team USA camp forming in nearby Monterrey. Not sure where that's going at this point.
Odd stuff: According to an (TnF News or Running Times?) article by Mark Winitz, Jay gave up racing competitively when running the 1992 (or thereabouts) Big Sur Marathon. In mid-race, he was struck with an epiphany in a message from God that he should quit. He stopped mid-race and never put on a number again.
You wouldn't happen to know if she's doing better now, would you? I like happy endings (that wasn't sarcasm).
I know the original post asked about BOYS past champions, but 1992 GIRLS winner Liz Mueller from CT took a year off from college after graduating, passed on dozens of Div I scholarship offers, then paid her own way to Central CT State, ran XC for 1 season, beat Amy Rudolph in her 1st race, skipped Nationals (outside personal Coach's request), and subsequently quit running altogether. Became a professional boxer, won a world championship in her weight class, and recently retired from boxing. Wrecked by an over-zealous Coach who controlled her every move and cost her $100K in free education in promise of an Olympic medal. Sad.
Steiner was a very good pro Bi / Triathlete.
Steiner was a very good Bi/ Triathlete in the 80's. I don't know if he was a Ironman though?

Whoops, Sorry about that guys. How do you delete post(s)?
I believe Wendy went on to compete at Stanford (although I don't know how well). Now she's a rep for adidas.
South Regional Meet Records
Boys
Alan Webb 14:43 (2000)
Girls
Erin Keogh 16:45 (1986)
I was on the South Team in '84 where she finished 5th as a sophomore. My memory of her was that of a very sweet gal. It's sad to hear about her obsession with training as well as her health issues.
I know that Erin Keogh went on to the Univ. of Texas (they won the women's national meet in '86, so it wouldn't have been that unusual back then)...She still holds the Texas Relays 10k record in the 34:40, but I don't have info on if she graduated or how she did in cross.
