In 1998 I was a member of the US Military World XC Team. (Long Course)Because we were selected for the team based on our running resumes, (no trials) I didn't have any races in a pair of XC Spikes. I was sent a pair from my shoe sponsor that fit a tad on the tight side, but I didn't think it was a big deal, just one 12k race. My feet didn't like the spikes at all during the race and Mid way thru the last 2k lap I landed awkwardly coming up a small incline and felt a "pop" in my left foot followed by a pretty sharp pain. I limped home and went to the medical tent to get the foot looked at. The doctor (from the host country of Ireland) looked at it, said something about a dislocated bone and popped it back into place. The pain relief was instant and I was able to run a cool down with very little discomfort. I also did a long run the next day.
Now I don't know if this is what happened to Rupp, but I know that it can happen.
