Why would a 3:50i/7:30/8:06/13:01i guy who was talking openly about going after the WR in this event be scared of the last 400m of a race?
a record setting race is a fast pace, rabbited race with either a small negative split or positive split. negative split in the case of the 5000m record and positive in the case of his 2mile. basically rupp does not have the raw speed to change gears and compete with those guys over the last 400 of a mile. he can perhaps somewhat be there in a 5km after running some 66s then running a 54 or 53 second last lap but when hes running 60 second laps hes not going 53 and does not have the ability too like willis and lamong.

Wow. That is pretty embarrassing for you.

I agree with this, and think it was a mistake for Rupp to get in a competitive indoor mile like this vs a record attempt. Outdoor is different as there is more room for running and going for time. When Rupp gets to 47 for 400 then he can think of the mile, but personally I think he should focus a lot more on the 10000m than he has been.
The other time Willis faced Rupp was the 1500 at Lausanne in 2012, right after the Olympics. It was a deep race, Willis only 11th in 3:34, Rupp DNF'd and did a workout later.
Willis also beat him in the 2008 Millrose Games mile, while Rupp was in college.

Every elite athlete is disliked amongst some of their fellow competitors.
The issue here is why? Is it because they don't like someone taking a different approach to training and racing? Is it because Nick feels he has to prove himself over Galen at the mile distance because Galen is on the same playing field while training for 5000 and 10000? I don't think it's as much Galen's fault as it is Nick's. I don't think Galen plans a season around trying to prove himself over Nick Willis. He probably doesn't even think about him much at all and if he does it might be something to the effect of, hey Nick's a great runner and it's great to compete with him even if it's a win or a loss.
It's fair and natural to have some bias against your competitors, especially if they can race at your level at your distance when it's not even their specialty. I get that Nick got offended when hearing of the 10K silver medalist aiming for an indoor mile WR, which is something Nick has not achieved or perhaps feels it's not a high probability.
This is kind of Nick's way of saying, 'it's my mile race, so stay away from it.'
A bit like a cross country runner who trains all year for 5K and 10K having 1500 meter runners around him at NCAA cross country.

If he wanted more of Rupp, he could enter some 5/10s.. wake me up when that happens.
Why would Willis do that? Dropping down to the mile to headhunt is Rupp's gimmick, and Willis, the mile specialist, wants to give Rupp a serious run at that distance.
A serious race? They were jogging, for which they should all share the blame, including Rupp.

How had the going gotten tough? They ran a slow 800 and were, as a group not interested in racing it seemed.
Being hurt, if he felt something, is a perfectly reasonable reason to drop out only if being cautious.
Had it been a hot pace, I might understand people questioning his action but it wasn't.
Now why Rupp didn't force the pace, I don't know, I thought he would want a fast race.
Exactly, there was no tough going. It was a slow, nothing indoor race.

Oh my, you're one of THOSE guys. I suppose you think the Olympics weren't serious races either?
Look, we don't hate rupp because he is better than us. We hate him because he is a cheater, goofy looking, has zero charisma, is spoiled, is stupid and is just plain unlikable.
What workouts did Rupp, Cain, Hasay do?
Hahahaha
So no he hasn't?j walter weatherman wrote:

Speechless that someone could be both this ignorant about running QND too lazy to do a 30s search.
I agree but Rupp did not look good. For a guy who was running at his 2 mile pace he did not look "easy". He looked burned out and tired. I may be wrong but I don't think he is going to do much the rest of this indoor season. I like the idea of those post race workouts but it seems like his mad scientist coach got a little too carried away with them. He did a 4:01 1,600 on his 5th repeat after his 2M AR a week ago and he can't even run that pace fresh for one mile now? Injury or not, something is wrong.
Nobody is really worried about Rupp. He has speed and strength, but neither the acceleration nor tactics necessary for a competitive indoor mile race. U.S. milers are worried about Centrowitz. Fortunately for them, he is sick indoors and won't be competing. Rupp also has a very fragile ego. I really don't think he has the gumption to ever medal again in a 5k/10k without relaxed Mo bringing him along.

Yeah, I'm sure that wimp will never medal at the Olympics! Oh wait . . .
Two days ago in the "Rupp drops out" thread, I said I would like to see a runner call Rupp out for this. I'm quite surprised somebody actually did it.
Nick Willis is a G, and if anybody is going to talk smack to Galen, Nick Willis is the most qualified.

G is short for "gangsta". Not an insult, it's a compliment akin to "cool cat".

Nick Willis @nickwillis -
"Disappointed. The two times I've raced Rupp... two DNFs. Both times he still did a w/o after. #milrosegames?"
Pretty funny. Even Willis hints that Rupp drops out when the going gets tough...
Didnt willis need someone to drop out to get that silver?
