Mark Mastalir (4:05) John Trautmann (8:05 3k) Mark Dani (8:49 indoors).
The depth this year compares with 1974-1977.

Yes, that would be 1976. Hulst, Hunt, Salazar, Chapa stack up against anyone for high school accomplishment.
And I'd take that standard given that accomplishment at the pro level raises the issue of what's "real" and what's aided.

A) Like the guy before me said, it's a thread about high school
B) He ran 1:46.2 at NCAAs and though he didn't do much after graduation, he was fast enough to train with the OTC Elite...

He did your mom afterwards.
Right.
As stated before -- Quality vs Quantity Debate.
Quality -- 2001:
Webb 1:47/3:53/8:45
Hall 3:42
Ritz 13:44
JJ 1:48.2 800
MSyl 1:48.7 800
HSR in DMR (also #5 all time)
Quanity:
2004,2008,2013 can argue.
2007
Chris Derrick, German Fernandez, Luke Puskedra, Colby Lowe, Mike Fout, and Donn Cabral to name a few. We'll have to wait and see how they end up comparing to 2004 and 2001. But I would guess that Derrick ends up dominating the 5k and 10k, German will have short periods of time where he is really good at the 1500, and Puskedra will be a world class marathoner. Also Donn Cabral will be a medal contender in the steeple.

Quality:
Jacob Hernandez > JJ, MSyl
Leo Manzano > Webb, Hall
Rupp 4:01, 13:37 > Ritz 13:44, Hall 4:01+
as i said back on the first page, this year might be the best as far as quantity of top guys. Arroyo's 1:47 is really the only thing so far that stands out quality-wise though compared to plenty of other years.
As far as quality yeah 2001 is probably tops. Webb, Hall, the Jefferson twins all in the 3:53 - 4:05 range. Webb 1:47, MS and JJ at 1:48. Ritz and Webb at 8:44/8:45, Ritz 13:44, and Ritz superior XC to anyway else since.
I could be biased because i'm a 2001 grad and was a teammate of Webb's, but it is hard to argue with the above stats for at least best quality, not necessarily best quantity, considering that 2001 had both the best track runner and the best XC runner in the past few decades at least.

Webb is not the best track runner, he's the fastest high school miler, much as he's currently the fastest American miler, but he's way down the list of best American milers. So Webb goes to NCAA and gets 3rd his freshman year, Manzano wins as a true frosh and goes on to silver in 2012.
Now turning to Ritz. Rupp's track times are better, even with Hall's 1500m added, Rupp has better PRs and range than both in highschool and beyond. But, Rupp was 2nd to Withrow at Footlocker, Withrow goes on to beat peo Ritz at World XC his frosh year of college. And then there's Ben True, who with his 6th place at World XC and silver team medal now trumps Ritz in XC.

Please read the thread title before you post things that make no sense. Here, I'll make it easier for you:
"Best HIGH SCHOOL class of all time?!"
... HIGH SCHOOL
haha, and no Manzano is no where near the runner that Webb is, not to mention plenty of other top american distance runners. Its great that he got his silver, gotta give him respect for that, but look at EVERYTHING else. One race does not make him better than runners who are actually far better than him. For example, him and Rupp both have Silvers from last year, and yet Rupp is wayyyy better than Manzano.
Enough with your foolishness "Quality vs. Quantity"
If we are going by post high-school accomplishments, then it is clearly 1965. Jim Ryun and Frank Shorter graduated high school that year.
If we are going by who were the best that year as high school seniors, I would put 2001 up against any year.

THIS!
SOUTHERN California had 4 consecutive World Junior X-C champions 1974-1977. Nothing was tougher than California high school running in the seventies.
Unbelievable depth.

Me either. Bakken and meb are the only guys on list who even made the world stage. Bakken for Norway.
