What about a marathon on a track?
But seriously, in the Henry Rono thread, it says he was nearly lapped at 5000 m, in a 10,000m race, but then he took off and won the race.
I've seen this happen at a 42.2K. Indoors
What's all this about marathon on a stick?
In seriousness. I got to believe sometime, somewhere a gung ho front runner hit the wall deep into a 10000M, maybe even a 5000M and it happened. Probably not in an elite level race but some official high school race.
1977 NAIA Outdoors. Doug Klaxton won in 2:28:19 over Vic Morton II, who ran 2:30:02. Morton went out too hard, and on Lap 82 he lapped Klaxton. However, it was a hot day, Morton began to struggle, and the rest is history. The next year the NAIA voted to discontinue the marathon on a track.
When I worked the 1999 ACC Outdoor Champs at Clemson, Nolan Swanso of Wake Forest had just lapped the entire ACC 10k field and then dropped out of the race. The 2nd runner, who had 7 laps to go passed by the lap board which said 6 laps to go twice, once he was told he had 7 (being a lap down to the leader) and then came by again to see the 6 laps to go sign which was for him!! So yes, it has happened!
sorry, Nolan Swanson
How far is this track marathon?

Ummm...ever heard of the marathon on the track?
What about a 6 day marathon on the track
http://planetultramarathon.wordpress.com/2008/10/18/the-history-of-the-6-day-race/I once ran 7 miles of a marathon on an indoor track with a buddy...
Has a lapped runner ever come back to win a race in a 10,000 meters or less?
I've read that it could only happen if a marathon were ever run on a track.
Yes, there is a Henry Rono thread on LRC now, where it is mentioned that he did it in a 10,000m race.
I'm pretty sure this happened once. There was this time I was running a marathon on a track and I lapped this guy. He came back to win. I figure the only race where this could happen would be a marathon on a track.
I haven't read the rest of this thread, but my sense is, in response to the original question, that this would only be possible if a marathon was run on a track.
Teg doesn't run the marathon on the track.
when i was a boy i was dragged to watch my father run a marathon. it was on a 180m banked indoor track in North Dakota. He was lapped six times, then came back to win by 14 laps. I'll never forget that night, it was magical. It's on youtube I think.

Yes, but do you think it could happen on an indoor track too?
You guys are just being silly now.
But to answer the question, this happens a lot in the 42.2m race on a 40 centimeter track.
