Since the marathon organizers don't have too much they can do with the medals anyway (if the above poster is right, even the charity organization doesn't want them), you're doing a favor by taking the medal off their hands.
Plus, you did run a marathon, even if unofficial--since the official one wasn't available.
I have no particular bias for or against finishers' medals. If someone hands me one, I thank them and take it. If the race doesn't offer any, I don't feel deprived. Some medals, I was giving to nieces and nephews when they were kids. Some I keep as mementos, in particular for out of town races.
Anyway, I'd be interested in hearing what uses people could suggest for these medals. Melt them down and build new subway tracks with them? Put them in a time capsule and send them off following the Voyager space craft?
Maybe they would make nice wind chimes.
