This even made it onto TMZ. Now we know what it takes for track to go mainstream. The sponsorship possibilities are limitless.

Getting the spilts for the beer was easy. It looks like the time he is yelling out for the quarter is the COMBINED time of drinking and running. So his approximate splits:
:08 - first beer
:62 - first lap
:17 - second beer
:63 - second lap
:21 - third beer
?? - Could not hear the split - maybe a :67?
:20 - fourth beer
?? - Could not hear the split - but if it was a :67 third lap and a 5:19.9 finish that would equate to a :59 last lap.
These are pretty rough estimates, but does give you an idea of his splits
I'm impressed
I loved the "It's just water!"
HAHAHAHAHA - Runners World at it's best![/quote]
"Runners World at it is best?" What are you talking about?

I realize the Olympics are over and he needs to blow off frustration for not medaling, but is this really what we want to see from one of the american best at 800m. Honestly Nick, I supported the whole "We need Change" message, but this is just plain unprofessional of you. It's time to stop the frat boy antics and act like a grown-up. Really You should not be encouraging our youth to participate.
American olympians are not allowed to have fun!!!!
I love how he drank FOUR BEERS and people are acting like he's a hooligan.
I bet no other olympians ever have 4 beers in one evening.
You are the lamest people ever.
At what age does running a beer mile become cool again? Is there a Master's beer mile record?
What's Ed Whitlock's best beer mile? You know those Canadian's can put it down.
Does anyone with exercise physiology knowledge have any input with regards to the affects of 4 beers in 5 minutes of running? How much of the alcohol is absorbed in such short time, and how does that alcohol affect the muscular and cardiovascular systems? It seems like a great way to get injured if you ask me. But it is only a mile. You know what would be REALLY stupid? A beer marathon. Can you imagine? 26 beers in 26.2 miles?

Rumor has it that Todd Williams ran something like 4:42 for the beer mile way back in the day. This is back before iphone videos and that stuff so you's have to reach out to him to hear the story. Brojo's you got his email address? I'm sure he'd tell you the same story he told me some years ago.
Actually, I heard Gerry Lindgren beat out Pre in the very first beer mile to win in 4:20.7!!
Pre went on to win the next week at the NCAA beer mile championship, though.

Running splits pretty good, but I am more impressed with the drinking splits
What kind of message is this sending to high schoolers that look up to him? It's immoral and unprofessional. He needs to be banned from competition for promoting such childish behavior.
when are you silly people going to realize nick symmonds doesnt give a fuhk?
dont be mad at him for trying to make our boring sport a little less boring.
He failed to turn the beer upside down, so how does this count? I bet there was a good amount of beer left in some of those cans.
I guess some of you have heard of the Aggies running club out of nor cal.
The theme of the club has always has always been "the faster we run the sooner the fun".
Beer running and beer miles are and have long been a club tradition. Sorry to spoil Nicks parade but on a regular basis we have had numerous Aggies break the so called world record beer mile.
If Nick wants to be the champ lets put a little challenge out there and forget this PR stunt BS and toe the line.

Proof?
Watched the TMZ video, Symmonds is a total amateur.
1) He doesn't walk forward at the start. You are allowed to walk from the start line to the finish line while drinking.
2) He actally walks backward during one of the beers.
3) He takes time to set down his empties.
4) More of a point of style here, but I think he could cut down on drinking time by taking longer pulls on the later beers. More pulls = more time.
There is no official rule on overturning beers for verification. Personally, if I was doing a record attempt I would hand my empties back to my handler and have him verify the emptiness.
Personally, I love the fact that he's going after a hot beermile but I think he should have waited. Why isn't he racing in Europe?

Even at my age (48), I'm certainly not opposed to anyone enjoying a few beers or doing a beer mile, but publicizing it seems inappropriate for an elite runner and maybe not the best decision for someone trying to pick up additional sponsors. Maybe it'll attract a couple of companies. Good for him if it does. I couldn't care less if Symmonds wants to do a beer mile, but videotaping the event and publishing it comes across very bush league.
As others have mentioned, just curious why he's not racing in Europe? Some great meets post-London. For someone trying to make more money in the sport, a few more big meet might be a better idea than the beer mile. Is he not interested in pursuing the AR?
BTW, I don't think his beer mile is making our sport less boring. Personally, our sport would be more interesting if the guy who just placed 5th in the Olympics with a big PR was still racing in Europe.
If his goal is to get people talking about him...what is better - a race in Europe or this beer mile?
Bad press may be better than no press.
This is getting his name out to people who may not have known who he is. This may then bring more attention to track overall.
You might be right, but is doesn't say much for our sport if a beer mile gets more attention than an AR or a win in Europe or even another solid performance after his impressive race in London.
I have no problems with him running a beer mile (or getting hammered, etc.), but publicizing his beer mile with the track season still going on just reeks of no class or "hey, look at me." I'm just not impressed, but as others have pointed out, he "doesn't give a f*ck" what I think!
