Here's a question - after spanking Merber up and down the Penn Relays, what the hell kind of shape must Donn Cabral be in?
I'm guessing about 8:32 steeple shape.

Well I'll be damned. I'm moving to Maine this summer... it obviously works! A 3:38 from Van Ingen the other day and now this? Congrats.
Anyone know the U.S. soil record for sub-3:40 with no Africans?
For the life of me I can't understand why Willis would travel from the other side of the world to run 3 laps for free. Rabbits usually pace races that are faster than they can run and if you are pacing a race against guys you can beat, why not be the ultimate pacer and go all the way to the finsih an .
Willis is based in the US, was pacing teammates and got a good workout running 2:51 for 1200 in tonight. Doesn't seem complicated to me.
Why is this being called an American college record? Why does Jim Ryun's 3:33.1, which he ran as a world record when he was at Kansas, not count?

you guys read it wrong... it was murga not murber
OK, but who would Murga be?
Here is how to make ANY track seem like 390 meters:
-No wind
-Two pacers
-Deep field
-NO WIND
Reference: Mt SAC, Stanford, any Euro venue
Nick Willis was the pace maker for 1300 meters..

It must have been out of season. Lagat's 3:30 when at Washington State is the ACR when considering marks outside of regular collegiate season. Records get really confusing. I don't blame you. Yea, Jim Ryun was a boss. But I don't believe he ever dropped a 7 second pr out of the blue. I've been a big fan of Merber. I hope he stirs it up at NCAA's. And if he runs like he did today, he could be in it to win it at the trials.
GO MERBER!!

Which is why the time is fast. Absolutely agree. If it was a prelim race, it's a whole different game. However, his kick with 200 to go is a representation of his fitness. And, well, 3:35 is still very fast for an American Collegiate. You can't deny that.

No, it's not-- Lagat was not an American at the time.
Give this man a Klondike bar!

Nope. The NCAA considers records "in season" or not. Only Track and Field News makes any "out of season" distiction. TAFN has been irrelevant for a long time now. Ironically TAFN considers "out of season" high school performances as records, but not the same consideration as college. Go figure.
I go with what the NCAA says:

Most important: evening start time.
Not to pull this into a discussion of semantics, but can someone explain how an out of season mark is really out of season if the person is still racing on the track? Is it the academic calendar or a date after ncaa's or graduation? if a college athlete makes the Olympics with eligibility remaining is that mark out of season?
