Onitsuka Marathon,
This is an interesting thread that making a second or third trip around. I wasn't posting earlier.
In December 1971, in preparation for the 1972 Mission Bay Marathon (Jaunary 1972 race) I went to Blue Ribbon Sports in Los Angeles looking for a marathon shoe. John Bork (great runner in his own right) sold me a pair of Onitsuka Marathon shoes. The shoe was completely white in color so as not to violate international rules related to logos. The shoe had the distinct Onitsuka stripes, but the shoe was all white nylon. Funnily enough, the shoe had a leather insole and a very thin rubber sole.
Mission Bay was to be my first marathon. I asked an old timer what I should wear with the shoe. He advised me to put as much Vaseline as possible on my feet, and lace the shoes up with no socks. Well, I did as instructed, and with the leather insole I was slipping in the shoe as I warmed up. I went back to my car, wiped the Vaseline off my feet, put on a pair of socks, and headed to the start.
I ran 2:22:20, finished third, and qualified for the US Olympic Trials. Wish I still had those shoes. My mother threw them out with the Bowmerman made Nikes from the Trials.
