I focused on "recovery" to explain the principle of modulation ....
BUT Aerobic running (@ relatively easy paces) is still a stimulus .... maybe not enough to generate an improvement in performance capacity but if done in sufficient quantities (e.g. 2 x 60 minutes for a Kenyan elite) enough to MAINTAIN aerobic condition/fitness.
For a sub elite athlete daily 2 x 30 minutes of easy running might serve the purpose equally well.
