If you can dodge a wrench... you can dodge a ball.
If you can dodge a wrench... you can dodge a ball.
I agree that avoiding games that are competitive, difficult, and potentially painful is ridiculous. They should be embraced and set up as challenges. It's not about coddling the kids on the receiving end of the game. They need to "toughen" up and learn from it. The problem is on the other end, those who are delivering the blow. Those students inevitably take the game too seriously and take pleasure in doling out pain. This leads to social and emotional issues in the classroom and school that aren't healthy. Teaching students to be merciless and ultimately violent is not okay. Teaching them to be competitive, to practice self control, and good sportsmanship is the goal. Dodgeball can do this. If the game is kept in check by a responsible, competent teacher, it can be a healthy learning experience for the superior player as well. Explaining this concept to students before allowing them to play is important. It is very difficult for K-5 students to "get" this.
Ray, yes, it did touch a nerve. It's okay... I know what you're talking about.
Can't have human targets. That is what we were told. I had a dodge ball unit with about 7 different versions. The kids got more out of that unit than anything else. They would play everyday if you let them.
