More height also equals more power, and one can have a thin build and still be tall. Ultimately, hard to say without more tall east africans.
Robert Cheruiyot, Ryun, Snell, Scott, Tergat, Sol, Teg, even El G--all pretty tall.

there isn't an optimal height for any distance.
five foot 11 plus or minus 6 inches is the usual range for medalists for all distances.
long sprints favor guys a couple of inches taller, marathon a couple of inches less.
that's about it.

1500m is a good middle of the road distance to figure this out.
Look at the top two ranked Americans from last year.
Andrew Wheating - 6'5"
Leonel Manzano - 5'5"
I think that tells you the whole story of optimal runner height right there.
Don't you get the feeling that Manzano is a gutsy runner who gets every last bit of speed out of his frame, while, Wheating has largely underperformed?
I think that in the long sprints and middle distances, height (to a point) is an advantage. What's much more important though is proportion, or shape, and weight.
I'm 6'5 and a distance runner. I think the one thing I always lacked was lack of weight. If I had less I feel as though my stride would be the advantage factor. What it comes down to is usually torso to leg ratio. A guy like Michael Phelps say would never make a good long distance runner as hes carrying all that upper body mass with small stride lengths. Its important as the athlete grows in height to also have most of that be legs. Kevin Durant for instance is 6'10 but has massively long legs and is about 240lbs. He's probably not that slow if you put him in an 800 against Lebron. Lebron is 250lbs and 6'8, so Durant has 2 inches on Lebron plus being 10lbs lighter. Lebrons body type is pretty evenly balanced where Durant has clearly a short torso and gigantic legs. In basketball this doesn't apply as overall height is more important than stride length, but I think generally if you get taller, you'd have to make sure to keep your torso small, or it would be hard to have a future in running. For me I have an even torso to leg ratio, but some guys I know who were faster than me had 36in inseams with much shorter heights like 6'1. We basically have the same leg length but I cary extra 4 inches of weight around the track.
