I am anxious to see what the result of the b sample is. This doesnt fall in line with the other epo busts that our sport has seen. Most have been large names, or at least high performing atheltes. Rachael is not a top athlete, and to use for a 34:57 10k doesnt seem smart.
My guesses are (in no particular order of outcome)
The test was screwed somehow and the B sample will come up negative.
Someone wasnt happy with her competing for Puerto Rico and spiked her sample to get a positive result.
She somehow got ahold of epo whether through being in a hospital or as a rep and decided to "give it a try" not knowing at all what to do or how to use it she used too much too close to her race and tested positive. She also didnt dose effectively thus not giving herself a performance boost (i.e 34:57 10k). Epo can show up in the urine or blood if a shot was taken close enough to the race but still have no benefit if she wasnt taking in enough iron. Her hematocirt would not see a rise but she would still have traces of epo in her samples.
Puerto Rico may be running a doping program. To have that many atheltes test positive could indicate this. Once Rachael decided for sure that she wanted to compete for PR and be an olympic hopeful, they put her on the program.
So many possibilities to speculate. This result is very eye opening meaning there could be other NCAA users or low key users across several different countries. Makes one wonder if you're competing against clean fields in your own local road races. Most likely we are, but this could indicate otherwise.
Part of me hopes that this result will prove that the current epo test is poor and can be completely disregarded and that a more accurate test must be developed.
