I suppose one could drum up analysis showing deviation from median time in a given year (or across multiple years). This would be a waste of time however because it would demonstrate what most people already know to be true; that Manzano's deviation would be larger than the vast majority of other tier-one and tier-two 1500 guys.
Do you really just love being a contrarian that much? Christ, you need to re-format results just so you can get the last word. It is insanity. I think somebody wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, well, just about every morning.
Works for me in England.
Rudisha's long stride is pretty unmatchable at that cadence. Scary thing is I suspect he will go faster!
The story has made it to ESPN, now we just need to get them to put it on the front page. Email them about this.

Hello David,
That's me, Pam. I saw your great performance in Berlin. I need your help. As you probably know, my Mexican friend Memo was arrested 2 years ago and I am looking for a new supplier. My manager said that it was already too risky and he didn't want to be locked (that bastard!!!).
As a consequence of this bastard's cowardice, my performances plummeted terribly and I am currently somewhere around the 72th place in this year's lists, which is frustrating for me - as a former world record contender. Everybody is laughing to me! I do hope that you can understand me. Help me, please!
Please write to
or
Thank you in advance
Pam

You don't understand what 'intrinsically' means do you?
Yes thank you!
Intrinsically \In*trin"sic*al*ly\, adv.
Internally; in its nature; essentially; really; truly.
[1913 Webster]

Don't try and be a smart arse. Lol. :0)

Intrinsic is NOT an synonym for essentially in a colloquial sense, it means essentially in a literal sense. Intrinsic means "real value" not derived value.
The word you are looking for is "extrinsic".
You can offer the opinion that Kipketer's 1:41.24 in Zurich is extrinsically superior to his 1:41.11, but you cannot say that 1:41.24 is intrinsically superior to 1:41.11. It is not, nor will it ever be.
Rudisha's wikipedia page was already updated less than an hour after the race. That was quick work.
wow, at first I was thinking "yeah right, troll" but this was just amazing. Nice link to the race german dude.

(this explains how a supposed "consistent 3rd-6th place finisher" in 5k's can win the diamond league title in his event. Whacky scoring system they must have for that to happen, huh?)
Typical of Lance.
Not a wacky scoring system at all.
Merga (1st, 16 pts)) ran every Diamond league race (7 of them) and finished consistently 3rd, while scoring in all of them. Had Merga finished in 3rd again at Zurich he would have tied with Bekele (2nd 14pts), who ran six DL races and only scored in three. Beating Solinsky at Zurich made the difference.
Chepkok(tie 3rd, 6pts) ran six DL races and scored in 2.
Kipchoge(tie 3rd, 6pts) ran in all 7 DL races, scoring in 2.
Kiptoo (5th, 4 pts) ran 3 DL races, scored it one, winning DN Galan.
Solinsky (tie 6th. 2pts) ran 4 DL races, scored in one.
Mutahi (tie 6th) ran 4 DL races, scored in one.
he wasn't even breathing hard. red flag! very suspicious.
To ????????? and Arkansas:
Check out this article from 1972.
http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vault/article/magazine/MAG1085884/index.htm
It begins, "The race had been run and Jim Ryun had finished forlorn and last in 4:19.2 ...." Ryun had already achieved greatness by his achievements up to that point and made the Olympic team again (3rd time) later in 1972
Marty Liquori's book "On The Run" has parts of the 1977 season where he gets his ass kicked. I can't find the book right now, but from memory there were indoor miles in like 4:07 and a not so great trip to Japan.
He ends up with a very fine season including the American record in the 5000.
Yeah, remember Coe and Kipketer's WR, they were bouncing around gleefully, not even breathing hard at all. I think when you're in WR shape, aerobically you are as fit as you're gonna get.

Well could it not be argued that the intrinsic portion of the performance is the level at which his body was able to perform on that day, and as such the time is just a derived value? I assume the poster was saying that when he went 1:41.24 his body performed better than in when he ran 1:41.11, but due to the poor race strategy (an external influence that, along with the physical performance, combines to make up the overall performance) the derived value (final time) of his performance is lower than the intrinsic value.
Liquori also ranked #1 in the world in 1977 in the 5000.
Another inconsistent guy was Lasse Viren. Four Olympic gold medals, including one with a world record in a race where he fell down! Yet, indifferent results in non-Olympic meets.

Lasse Viren had several poor performances even during the 1976 season when he ended up wining two gold medals.
Maybe Manzano is one of those guys who are great when they're on but when they're off for whatever reason, they're way off. Some guys are like that. They're human. So what?

I think the comment comes from the fact that Leo BOMBS worse than any other elite athlete in the world at his level. I have never heard of 1:44/3:33 guys getting DFL and run 3:50 jogging it in so much. No question he is an animal -- but I think that's where the poster's comments were coming from.
Nice run, Leo!
Bombing a race with a slow time is better than DNF, imo.

Please don't fall into the "Manzano is inconsistent" mindset that Letsrun oddly seems to have. He's consistently very good, with maybe one or two poor races thrown in there. If your definition of consistent is "never ever has a bad race, ever", then sure. But in the grand scheme of things, Manzano's as consistent as they come.
I think Leo gets crap for being inconsistent because when he had a "bad race" he finishes dead last, 50m off the front. And he has those races on a semi-regular basis. WCs in 2009, the Olympics in 2008... He has had one or two of those races this summer alone! Prefontaine mile, dead last by 9(!) seconds. Monaco 1500m, dead last by 4 seconds. But then he has also run 3:33 twice, 1:44 and 3:50 this same summer. That is the definition of inconsistency.
Consistency is a guy like Nick Symmonds. How many races has he run this year where he hasn't been between 1:43 and 1:45? He doesn't always place near the front, which is a different story altogether, but he's not falling off the back with 300m to go either.
Did Webb run? If not he should have! PR city!
