Texas Relays didn't even let the best match-ups unfold. ATM won pretty easy with Baylor and USC running well, but after that it dropped off. It would have been nice to see South Plains College get to run in with them...they ran 3:03.74 with 4 freshmen in the "college division" heat and won by 7 seconds - it was sick. Texas Relays doesn't allow them to run with the "big boys." Results say their anchor leg split was 44.63 - impressive!

On Florida's depth, they ran a 1:20 4x200 using 2 people from the 4x1 and 2 from the 4x4 and neither of the two taken from the 4x1 were Demps. Can you imagine running that close to a school record in a sprint relay without using the best sprinter on your team?
Demps is not the best 200 runner on the team. He's obviously the fastest at 100, but from what I've seen rarely even runs the 200.
does Wynne not run the 4x4 for UF anymore?
Good question. I hadn't even thought of that. I don't think he's run it for them this year, at least not in any of the higher profile meets. But when you've got Smith, McQuay, Taylor, and Anderson....well, I guess Wynne can concentrate on hurdles. Of course, if Taylor qualifies for nationals in the LJ and TJ, and Wynne does not qualify in either hurdles event, we'll probably see him running the 4x400 then.
Henry Thomas is certainly someone you want to compare too.......
I dont think Wynne even ran indoor. Hurt maybe? He certainly has been absent from results.
Yeah, I just looked over the Florida Relays results again and just realized that Wynne didn't run either hurdle event.
Meanwhile Johnny Dutch, Wynne's North Carolina mate, is TEARING it up. 49.52 400mH first week of April!!! and a 13.80 110mH to boot.

these were my splits, live.
Real world:
Anderson 46.4, McQuay 44.5, Taylor 44.9, Smith 44.5

Your response is tangential to my point, which is about UF's depth. We can talk about Demp's (lack of) prowess at 200m in another thread.
What amazes me is that UF has the luxury of sitting a world class sprinter and still has enough studs to run a world-class 4x2 relay.
How many schools have the luxury of letting someone as talented as Demps "specialize" in races of no more than 100 meters and are still likely to beat almost all other schools in a 4x2?

This may be collegiate reord.
The 2:59.59 broke the UCLA NCAA record of 2:59.91. The UCLA anchor was Henry Thomas. Also on the UCLA team were three Olympians; Steve Lewis, Danny Everett and Kevin Young.
I should have said "three Gold Medal winning Olympians;"

Good point. The depth they have is ridiculous. They ran quite a good SMR at Florida Relays also, and had two other guys, Jovon Toppin and Presont Wilson runing the 200m legs. The depth is crazy right now.
In 2008 they had a guy on the 4x1 squad Chris Rainey. That squad finished 3rd at NCAA outdoors. He sat out in 2009 but he is another one who could have an impact.
It might take 4 triple jumpers or two Belgian ringers to beat this team.

Not really. I agree about 100 and 200 guys being pussies and not wanting to step up to the 400.
But 400 guys put up with some serious pain. They do 500 and 600 meter reps in training. They put in work. They could switch it up to become 800 guys if they wanted to.
I suspect it's more the mindset that they are so close to world class, why change now.

Why do American distance runners constantly ridicule American sprinters for being lazy? It seems until the distance runners start to put up the results they should at least keep their mouths shut.

1st leg for 1 team, 3rd for the other. That's no small feat. At least he got to rest while the quarter milers were running.
This didn't actually happen. The race video is at the same flotrack page as the Florida 3:00 4x4 race.
Rainey ran indoors this year. He is a running back too, and I think is participating in spring football practice rather than track right now. grrrr.
Funny story: When Demps got to campus right after having run that 10.01 up in Eugene, there was a LOT of talk about him. One day after practice, Rainey challenged him to a race. They raced under the watchful eyes of most of the rest of the football team. They raced in the parking lot of one of the dorms. Rainey won. I have no idea the distance or margin of victory. This made the local newscast, btw.

Dutch runs for South Carolina.
Wynne went to hs in Georgia.
