Renee would not have won the race if she had the A standard. Hall, Rowbury, Davila, Delilah, and Koons were the only athletes with the A standard. No one else was capable of running sub 9:03 at altitude. This meant that those 5 athletes were ONLY racing each other for a top 2 finish. This was obvious on several accounts.
Renee went out at 2:59 for the first 1000. Why? Because she was trying to run sub 9:03 alone. Why didn't Hall or Rowbury go with her? Because she was not in the 5 with the standard and therefore not in their race. Hall said that they were not chasing Renee. They were racing each other, and with a 200 to go she noticed that Renee might be within striking distance. Only then did she try to go after her.
This same thing happened in the 1500. Uceny won because she didn't have the A standard. Rowbury and Donahue were the only athletes with the A standard and therefore were only racing each other.
Congrats to Morgan and Renee for winning national titles. However, this was a gift of the system and had nothing to do with either of them being the best runners in their event. They were both the best athletes without the A standard and nothing more.
