Jon has as about as much chance of breaking a 4 minute mile as he did/does in scoring higher than 700 on both sections of the SAT.
this guy is toast and Coach Dick is a disgrace.

NOPE, not harsh enough. I'm just taking out the garbage, mendacity man.
Friends alerted me to the original Outside mag article about MI's-own Gill. I used to think highly of the content in Outside but my opinion took a hit after reading that 'grocery store tabloid' story. What the hey were they thinking...what barometer of veracity did Outside subscribe to? And what, for goodness sake, was DBrown thinking? Was the edition an April one...you know, April Fools deal?

I had to look mendacious up. True.

Funny, it was Dick Brown who was explicitly hired to run Athletic West's doping program. It was Dick Brown who thought nothing was wrong with it. It was Dick Brown who pressured Sue Addison and Lee Arbogast to go on steroids (both of them declined). It was Dick Brown who had two of Nike's employees (Scott Krause and Bill Mittlestadt) shipping steroids in shoe boxes. Of course he's going to associate himself with a convict like Jon Gill.
This story is just amazing. I don't doubt the coach's abilities or experience, but what is he doing telling this Gill guy that he really has a shot? Gill is an alcoholic ex-con who has delusions of grandeur--supporting him, training him and helping realize realistic goals is one thing, but allowing him to kid himself into thinking he can make an Olympic team is pretty frickin' reckless--he's setting this guy up for a big fall. He's like a 35-year-old who was 2nd team all-state in high school basketball saying he's going to make an NBA roster. Or a 35-year-old 6-handicapper who says he's going to make the PGA Tour.
It's bizarre, to say the least.
What?!!?!?! I thought I'd get my tour card this year when I was done with my 10-20 day contract after the Lakers call me up.

I agree. This sounds like a shameful lab experiment, with the coach playing the role of Dr. Frankenstein. Based on the article in Outside, I'd say that Gill doesn't need a coach. Instead, Gill needs a mentor -- someone who can teach him the value of humility, honest labor, and good citizenship.
What Gill needs is his ass knocked around a bit and shown how this world works...he doesn't need to be a carny in track and field's version of PT Barnhum's (aka Dick Brown)side show.

I don't blame Gill for any of this.
I blame ESPN for showing the ridiculous story and any one on this board who has any knowledge of running believing there is a chance.
From Dumb and Dumber:
Lloyd, "What are the chances of us getting together, one in ten?"
Mary, "More like one in a million"
Lloyd, "So you're saying there's a chance!"
I'm proud to say that I was among those who called the whole Gill story horseshit nonsense when it first broke. Remember how many "believers" there were back then who just "knew" he would make the Olympic team, win a medal in Athens, etc? The whole thing is simply idiotic.
One of the best things about running is that you can talk about it all you want, but until you actually do it, you're just a blowhard.
One of my favorite quotes, from a friend of mine, who could've stole it, I don't know , but here goes:
I missed the Olympics by 4 seconds.... in the 100!!
I hear before the trials Gill will be joining Gabe in a bicycle hike to South America. For 4 weeks they will train with pigmies on a exotic trial in the Amazon. After that they will go to Peru and visit a strange aztec tribe that ingests wild hallucinogentic mushrooms. For the next 2 weeks they will trip out and hunt wild boar. Before they leave the tribe they will show their appreciation by impregnating two of the chiefs daugthers.
A year after they medal in Athens both Gill and Gabe will go back to the Aztec tribe and visit the offspring they created. They will then give their love children their Olympic Medals.
The above story is no more far-out than Gill winning an Olympic medal.
Wouldn't it be funny if Gill went to the trials and ran a 4:20 1500.

Give this guy a brake. He did his time, for some dump thing he did. He has got tailent, and a coach that has faith in hem. Things don't come along over night you know, it takes some time. My coach worked with a young runner who upon finshing up with HS school. Had only run 2:03, this guy wsa big and bulky, says other coaches sead he would not amount to anything. But my coach had faith in hem, and trained this guy for quite some time. Well that guy ended up being none other then Peter Snell. Let gill go out there and chase that dream. And heck you might end up being wowed.
Who was your Coach? Arthur L.? I don't think Peter Snell went to high school in the States. He ran for New Zealand. Moreover, I think that you might have been making that whole thing up.
I cannot say as to what kind of man John Gill is, and I will not say one way or the other about his Olympic aspirations. However, I believe he should keep quiet and let his feet do all his talking for him. It's bad luck to put your mouth on times your feet can't reach.
