worth pointing out what a coach/manager shouda been telling webb when he'd recovered his breathe & sat down in the locker-room after his 1'43 - & it doesn't exactly require a coach isaac newton nor more than a coupla minutes of inputing into some software :
"pretty damn good, lets see what you can do in osaka later, but that's just a prelim for big gold in peking next year
a 1'43 !
we need to hold onto as much of that speed as possible & some of that mid-27 endurance from last year
now, you couda gone 1'43.25 - 1'43.50 today with better splits & last year you couda gone 27'20 - 27'25 if you'd had perfect even pace/wabbiting & pushed it to the limit
i'm not asking for both next year, that's something we can build towards in the next few years for '12, but let's go for some sensible aims for peking
i think it's reasonable we can try to hold onto something like 1'44.0 - 1'44.5 speed as we have to give up some to get back something close to that mid-27 endurance, work which we haven't done as much of this year in trying to get more speed
i think we can still claim something like 27'40 - 27'50 endurance for the trade-off from this year
so, we can aim for next year :
1'44.0 - 1'44.5 / 27'40 - 27'50
let's try the 4 range of options, with slowest 1st
1'44.50 / 27'50 ->48.26 , 2'13.84 , 3'29.52 , 7'28.98 , 13'05.98
1'44.50 / 27'40 ->48.37 , 2'13.75 , 3'29.14 , 7'27.41 , 13'01.46
1'44.00 / 27'50 ->47.94 , 2'13.27 , 3'28.81 , 7'28.09 , 13'04.23
1'44.00 / 27'40 ->48.05 , 2'13.18 , 3'28.44 , 7'26.52 , 13'00.60
well, i think worst case scenario is you'll be there in mid-3'29 shape & with no hicham, bernie getting long in the tooth & no superfast kenyans or arabs ( except that ramzi guy ), we gotta be looking at least a bronze & outside shot at silver
best case ?
we coud be in mid-3'28 shape in peking & that means silver at worst & better than 50/50 of the big medal
maybe we might even get a bit better than 1'44.00/27'40 shape there, but we are going to get a medal if we race it right"
this is sorta thing that needs to be discussed with an athlete not nebulous drivel...
