a 5k is a 5000m you ignorant f***
my point exactly. He is more proud then the 99% most proud
who cares if lagat or anyone breaks 13:00. they'll still be 20+ seconds slower than bekele's wr. he'd be a straightaway and a half ahead of them. reebok 5000 is a bunch of b-level guys who can't hack it as true 5k runners. what ever happened to guys running 12:45-12:50 like they did in the late 90s? you had geb, cherono, komen, tergat, boulami, ali saidi sief, etc - these guys were busting out sub 12:50s week after week. even dieter baumann ran 12:54, something none of these guys in the race could do.
so my point is, who really cares about some 2nd rate runners trying to break 13:00. that was a big deal oh i don't know 20 years ago.
You are a moron... I now officially hate your guts

Lagat, Rono, Chalanga, Tergat,..they are all the same: Kenyan athletes. Not american born athltetes. How can you compare Kennedy and Lagat? Lagat is a Kenyan athlete who knew his days were numbered as a top Kenyan and switched citizenship to make more money, and lengthen his career. But he is not an American. To qualify for this "American" status one should have to go through the US high school system. Then they can qualify for an American record. We are no bette than Bahrain when we let aging runners from other coutries become US citizens hoping for a boost to our US team. De Reuck, Hellybuck, Kannouchi and Lagat all fall into that catagoy. Why not buy more Kenyans, Moracans and Ethiopians and just scap the US born runners?

Lagat has been hurt. He even ran hurt at the Olympics and still did pretty good. He works his ass off so give Kip some credit. Who are you to say he is not a top runner when you probably can't run anywhere close to his time. He is a great athlete and deserves the respect. Lay off man.
No EPO test in the 90s...hence a lot of guys under 13:00.
In 2008....6 (SIX) guys under 13:00
So far in 2009? 0 (NONE) under 13:00
In 2007....8 (EIGHT) guys under 13:00
A total of 63 men EVER under 13:00 (http://www.apulanta.fi/matti/yu/alltime/8_Men.html)
I think people underestimate the sub 13 5k like people are doing it on the weekends after a night of drinks and strippers.
Alan
While we're at it...
Only 31 men EVER under 27:00 in the 10k
http://www.apulanta.fi/matti/yu/alltime/9_Men.html
552 ever under 28:00
139 under 27:30
BK's record will not go down. No American in that field, including Lagat, can carry sub 63 second pace over 12.5 laps at this point in time.
I just don't think this record's in jeopardy. I definitely don't see anyone in that race putting up a better PR than Mottram (12:55). And 13:0x is a barrier lots of those guys haven't sniffed yet. And Lagat, nationality one way or the other, is no Meb (at least at this distance).
Why does race have to been brought into this. Why not just say Kennedy was born in America and Lagat was not.

Alan, you forgot about 2006 when NINETEEN men broke 13 minutes (and another ran under 13:01). How does that fit into your EPO test vs. no EPO test era?
Lagat was so proud to get his US citizenship that he celebrated by representing Kenya right after he got it. That is a proud American!

Oh give alan a break, he only reads body building mags, so he doesn't know much about track and field. But he we will make up a reason why your little stat STILL doesn't refute his argument!
Put some Kung Pao at the finish line & invite Webb, he'll pull through in about 12:35.
Throw in some hair plugs & freeweights, the guy might dive into the 11s.

Saidi Sief and Baumann are convicted doping cheats (and don´t give me that toothpaste conspiracy BS).
I don't recall there being very many Kenyans who were faster than Lagat in Osaka. Last year he was hurt. Even so, he's still fast enough to make the top 3 in the 5000 or the 1500 competing for any country on the planet.
I'm so glad I don't have to wake up every morning looking in the mirror at one of these sad bigots who feel like they have the right to determine who should or shouldn't qualify to be a "real" American.

Was the world record at 5 & 10km set in the 90's
What about the 5,000m women wr record progression plus the mens marathon in the past couple of years
Where does all that fit into your statistical analysis?
Plus the 2009 season has hardly started
====================================
My guess is Lagat will not go under 13. Anyone know what the pace is being set at?
