Here is some more info from the 2005 Penn Relays. The previous day Willis also ran the DMR, during this race Willis split a 3:55.1, then the following day Willis goes out and runs a 3:56.2, three hours after this race Willis goes on to run a 1:48.6 in the 4 x 800. Willis was a decent level above Wheating during the 2005 season.
Michigan won the 4 x mile race by 15 seconds. Therefore, they were competing against a similar type field as Oregon won by about 22 seconds.

the clock don't lie.
oregon wins.
Oregon women could also break Michigan's record next year!!
On paper Michigan looks pretty unbeatable...except that Oregon ran a faster time, so the record is theirs.
No point in arguing coulda, woulda, shouldas, that's why they run the race.
The argument isn't who ran a faster time during the 4 x mile relay. Everyone can read numbers, Michigan ran a 16:04 and Oregon ran a 16:03. The argument is 1) Who would have won based on the 2005 Michigan team vs. Oregon 2009 and 2) Nick Willis in 2005 was a far superior runner to Wheating.
It is always easier knowing that you have to run a time to get a record, that is why Rupp dug down deep to run that 3:58, he know that he had to run that fast to beat the record. Michigan on the other hand dicked around during their run since the smashed the previous record by over 3 seconds. They did simply what they had to do. Oregon was straining to run that time, Michigan was cruising.

so much for reading comprehension...
the point is they didn't run the race...they both ran solo efforts on different tracks and different conditions and ran very comparable times...who ran faster under these circumstances does not necessarily determine who is the better team...who the record holder is yes, but who would win head to head (real measure of who is better) is still open to debate
not one person has said michigan has the record, simply commented that in a head to head matchup they could probably take down the oregon team...you are free to disagree and present your arguments
waste of time but were all wasting out time as soon as we click "message board" on the front page...speculation can be interesting
Nobody "dicks around" to a 4 minute mile
Oregonlive.com should FIRE Ken Goe ! and hire a photographer.
Chapman and blink are the first two logical thinkers to ever post on Letsrun, kudos to you two.
All of this is a waste of time, but so is sitting there wathing a hockey, baseball, football or basketball game. We spend our time on here for the same reason that people spend all fricken sunday watching football, because it entertains us and it is interesting.
Now.
Brannen was better than Centrowitz
Willis was better than Wheating
Ellerton was better than Kiptoo-Biwot
Woods was about equivalent to Rupp (Rupp might just edge him)
Thankfully, this is at least moderately possible to compare. I remember back in 2001 when Webb ran his 3:53 and everyone was trying to determine who was better, Webb or Ryun. That was an uncomparable quest. To start with, Ryun probably thought back then that you should eat 1 pound of bacon and then drink the grease before a race, because it will give you lots of energy. It was uncomparable.

Finished in 16:03!
why didn't they run Acosta over Biwott
Is Acosta really that much better than Biwott. Biwott is a *cough 3:39 1500 *cough runner.

right but his training focus has probably been 5k/10k lately. Acosta is a 1500 runner... plus no offense but running Acosta would give the Oregon team the chance to go after the American Record
biwott ran a workout that morning and didn't know he was running til later
Ah, that is a lame American record anyways. Acosta probably had to hang out with his girl friend or something. I'm sure it was logically decided. Vin knew that it could have been an American record if Acosta ran.
Perhaps Vin did not let Acosta run since Biwott is more of a fighter, he had to pick the right runner that could run fast by himself. If Acosta would have run this, since he is not much of a fighter or clutch runner he probably would have blown up and ran a 4:10-4:20. My thought.
first of all acosta didn't run because he's red shirting this season. a perfectly legitimate decision, sorry I know we all want to be witty as hell and say he was hanging out with his gf or that lannana didn't run him because he's "not a fighter"(both of which you just completely made up), but unfortunately for all of us that's not the case, he's red-shirting, otherwise I'm sure he would have run.
secondly i'm not sure anyone on this thread is giving enough credit to rupp. People are treating him like anyone with a decent set of wheels can completely "dust" him in the last 100m of the mile. This isn't unreasonable before this past indoor season I would have said the exact same thing, but i think after what he did indoors this year he deserves a little more credit. This is the guy who a little while after dominating 5k outKICKED premier MILER dorian ulrey at the end of a dmr...and overall just showed an incredibley vast improvement in footspeed over the course of the season...i don't think outkicking him after a mile would be any small task for even the god-like michigan team...just my two cents
I saw Acosta making out with his girlfriend behind the bleachers.
Rupp only shows up on race day with his coach. They need to run the 4xmile without Rupp in most peoples eyes to get the credit!!!
