Gary and his staff have done a heck of a job with the meet managing at OSU and The Dual versus Michigan meet. Last year, with the band, cheerleaders, etc. It was one of the coolest track meets I have attended in the last decade.

Noting Ian Conner and Vincent Fries development (or lack thereof) in college (OSU versus Cincinnati) is perfect example of the double standard that OSU is held to versus the jealous Ohio people.
Ian Conner was a nobody from a small hick town with no coaching who came out of what seemed like nowhere his senior year. He chose to go to OSU and run under a coach who was an olympian.
Vincent Fries was a somebody at least as early as his freshman year in high school. He won the state meet 3 times in a row, until Ian beat him his senior year. He was from a small hick town but had great coaching and was the home town hero (has/had a sign as you enter his hometown stating his accomplishments). He chose to go to Cincinnati. Nobody goes to Cincinnati to make the jump to the next level.
The point of bringing Ian/Vincent into the discussion was to show that Ian was a huge talent who took down what had to seem like a giant to the rest of Div II or III.
Ian was completely on the upswing going into college and Vincent had already had his day in the sun.

Speaking of beating Michigan, I saw on OSU's website that they won't be charging anything for admission to the UM-OSU dual meet next Saturday. That should make for a nice pit stop on the way to my parents' house for Easter.
Unfortunately, I never saw that race at the state meet you were referring to. I do seem to recall that being an incredible senior class for the state of Ohio - See, Simms, O'Brien, Sovacool, Fox...tough year to be a distance runner in high school.
The Dual was free last year too, and they threw cool commemorative t-shirts into the crowd and I was lucky enough to get one. As the other poster said, the band and the cheerleaders made it even cooler. But the blaring music from the ball field next door during the first part of the meet was annoying. Hopefully Gary can prevent that from happening this year.
Re that senior class, you are exactly right. It was a great one. Simms ran that 800 the only way he could to try to beat See--go out hard and try to take the kick out of him since See had already won the 1600. But See was able to glide by him in the last 100 or so. He won in 1:51.1 if I remember correctly. Simms made it an exciting race though when nobody thought it would be.
i believe Malone got their asses handed to them by OSU at the All Ohio Meet and OSU didn't even send their full squad and Malone did, but that's just my opinion though...
What ever happened to bustthisnut.com?
dg got sick of paying for it, so he shut it down
Elon Simms ran 51-point his freshman year to get either 2nd or 3rd at Big 10's in 400h. The next year he went 50.79 and was in 1st at Regionals (top 5 make Nationals) and he crashed into the #7 hurdle. He has been 2nd ,2nd and 3rd at 600m indoors. He tweaked his hamstring last spring and this indoor season stepped off track and Penn State and broke his navicular. Throughout his time at OSU, he has been a great relay leg (including part of two-time indoor Big Ten Champs). He plans to use his last indoor and outdoor in 2010 while attending Graduate School at OSU. Additionally, he has split 1:50 a couple relays and has a 1:51 open.
Q: As every runner knows, the key to distance running is the pecotral muscles. How much can you bench?
A: Hmmm. I think I did 75 lbs a couple of years ago.
I have heard that recently the distance men have started a new lifting program. Not sure what it consists of but look for them to get big, I just hope not too big.
