Wait? After 5 years of hate and envy about the size and power of Rupp's treadmill, we find out that OSU has them too! Shows how ignorant the Rupp haters were/are about top Div-1 programs.
Fernandez race in Australia anytime recently? Does he train in Stillwater with the rest of his teammates? Does he have the same coach as the rest of his team, or does he have one of his own?
I believe that Smith's decision to race German is extremely out of character for him and is like a statistical outlier in Smith's coaching career. Despite many beliefs on this thread, Dave Smith seems to be very conservative (to me), in terms of training someone of German's caliber (Compare German's MPW with any other top D1 runner). German does train and race very hard, but not always by design. I continue to believe that Dave Smith has approached German's training and racing situation very conservatively. I think German's speed makes him less durable than most runners (running at the same effort). That is why racing him, despite injury, seems very out of character for Smith.
In terms of dealing with pressure... there is no more relaxed coach at the D1 level than Smith. In the interview with German following XC Jr. Nationals he chastised German for running his mouth. Dave Smith does everything in his power to keep German under the radar (even though clearly he's not only on the radar, he's right in the spotlight)

He is very talented but injury prone and I don't believe for a second he is "ducking" the competition; he ran 3:55.02 for the indoor mile I believe he is scared of no one in the NCAA. Not even the mighty Rupp.
He hid in the Open race at Pre-Nationals XC to avoid Chelanga, of course he'd be willingly to "duck" Rupp at Indoors Nationals. Coe took him to the wire in the 3000m, but Rupp broke Coe in 600m at the same distance, nothing but the same or worse in store for German if he was in the race and tried to challenge Rupp. Now he might redshirt Outdoors... to avoid The Rupp.

Dave always tries to slow us down like crazy....!! he doesnt put any pressure on us at all...
It must me very tough to slow down someone like German, he recovers very fast, run his long run maybe around 5.30 per mile, never seemed tired. I think he is just too good for his own body right now.
Not having much pressure on his system over distance would explain the fast mile times indoors. Smith's comment about wanting German to focus on the 1500/5000 through college is another indication the distance development is weak and that he plans to keep it that way. I see no reason for that, think it is more likely to result in injuries (racing with weak base) and explains OSU's dismal 8th place last fall with all the talent they had.
This being said, I still feel OSU is a good place for German. Smith is young as a coach and is probably quickly learning and adjusting.
Yes something is odd here. Smith is no dummy and I can't believe he would run German if the dye in the foot was showing up heavy anywhere on the test. Even though Smith says German is hurt...I think he may just be fine. He went early to Jordan, way ahead of Luke. I don't know, I can't see any coach in Smith's position even running German with a cold. Something does not add up.
if this injury is true, and german's injury during xc was true, then there is a problem with the training at osu

Logic fail
Anyone who would suggest to put toxic dye in his foot is an idiot.

Haha, you talk like you know Dave Smith, but you clearly don't.
Don't get me wrong, Dave is a great guy.
One of the smartest guys I know.
A guy everyone enjoys being around.
Relaxed? Not a chance.

The problem is that the diagnosis isn't black-and-white here. You're dealing with shades of gray. By definition, calling something a stress reaction means there is no indication you can see on an xray; All you have is a slight difference in density in a bone scan. Obviously, German feels something there some of the time, but sometimes these things progress to stress fracture and sometimes they don't.
I'm not in favor of someone with potential sub-3:50/3:32 talent messing around with cross country, but clearly German WANTS to run it. My impression based on what's been written by Smith is that German's going to go for it. If the injury gets worse, he redshirts outdoor; If it doesn't get worse, he competes the bare minimum to qualify for nationals and then runs in NCAAs.

Here's the problem: it's not just Smith who's saying German's hurt. As many of us fan boys have mentioned, German's Facebook status as of last week read something like, "German is very depressed." Also, German texted a high school friend saying that an MRI had shown "something." I haven't heard any detailed explanation of German's situation, but there certainly is some issue that Smith and German are weighing.
As for German flying out earlier, I'm guessing it has something to do with him skipping NCAAs. Since he stayed at home that weekend and (presumably) got ahead on school work, he and Smith decided he could afford to spend a little longer getting acclimated to/enjoying Jordan.
blah blah blah blah blah

While I'm sure German himself didn't go to coach Smith and tell him to keep him out of Chelenga's race, coach Smith kept his team out of the real race to avoid a screw up (duck the competition) and in doing so kept German from facing Chelanga. I'm sure the choice by Smith was primarily a team choice, but I doubt it bothered him that he might not get spanked by Sammy.
It's the coaches right to use whatever strategy he thinks is best, but to me getting in a habbit of ducking has negative results in the long run. It was just pre-nationals and if you lose it but still do well enough you have done what you need for a national birth. If you are good enough to win it on the big day, then you come and win it anyway despite what happened mid season. In fact maybe they would have come in with a little less pressure if they hadn't looked great in the main race at pre-nationals. Maybe German wouldn't have had as much pressure if he had lost to Sam.

this is what "ujsjh" was insinuating by using the words "he hid"...
Hey idiots, Oklahoma State was not in the same section as Liberty at Pre-Nationals this year so shut the f*** up about him or Smith "ducking" Chelanga.
