It is a very odd rule when you consider that people have been pretty well everywhere on Earth before these rules were made.

Where are this places at. Are there don't shit in the woods warnings posted?
Yes, you can see them from the Mass Pike when you drive past the reservoir areas. From the relevant regulations:
11.09: General Rules and Regulations for the Protection of Watersheds and the Watershed System.
(2) Watershed System.
(a) General Regulations.
4. All acts which pollute or may pollute the water supply are prohibited. No litter or refuse of any sort may be thrown or left in or on any land or water within any Watershed System. All Persons within said System shall use the sanitary facilities provided for public use.
Weird use of the word Watershed, they mean catchment area.

i been backcountry quite a bit.....never knew about or adhered to this rule, not that I'm saying it doesn't exist in someplaces though
but here's my take on pissibg rules.....do deer watch where they piss? bears? birds? any other animal?
if piss was so damn bad then they would have screwed up the ecosystem quite a bit already in those fragile systems
That's why you don't drink the water in the backcountry, without treating it (using a filter, tablets, or boiling). Places like Mt Whitney issue a wag bag to you when you pick up your hiking permit. With 100+ people on that trail a day, that's a lot of urinating and defecating. All that waste gets washed down into that beautiful stream flowing through Whitney Portal. Just because it's moving water (not stagnant) doesn't mean it's ok to drink it.
And animals don't urinate nearly as much as humans because they don't usually over-hydrate like hikers and runners do.
Were the women wearing Depends?? Also, what do women hikers do in no-pee zones??
what about the women wrote:

You're supposed to go 200' off the trail and away from water sources, dig a hole, pee in it, and bury it. But most people are too lazy to do that. Hence the wag bags.
So golden showers are a big no-no in the backcountry?
