The school is closer to his home which may be a good thing, and academically the school may have his major that Oregon didn't have."
Irv Ray claims to coach people all the time that he only talks to on the phone. The UCR distance team is terrible and had no freshmen or sophmores on scholorships for distance the past season. The only reason the team is improving is because everyone on the team has gotten older and no one had left the team. Older teams tend to perform better. Not to even mention the large amount of runners that either leave the team or are kicked off the team because of Irv.
Beer Runner hit the nail on head with respect to Irv Ray. The men have performed poorly but you can't say that about the women middle distance runners who match up well with most DI schools. Although I can't speak for Chad Hall, I would assume his decision to transfer to UCR is similar to why the Assumma's & Steve Alvarez chose to run there back in the 80's. He likes the coach and he likes home cook'n. UCR is the closest DI school to Big Bear and he'll have the support of his family. Because of the Assumma's and Alvarez, other runners followed and built a foundation for a good program that lasted throughout the 80's. Time will tell if this is a good decision and if others will follow. The beauty of track & field is that it is precisely measurable. His performances on the track at UCR will speak for themselves, good or bad. Meanwhile UCR, like all the UC's, is traditionally ranked in the 1st tier by US News and Oregon is ranked in the 3rd tier so educationally speaking he can't go wrong.
