Hurt? Please. I knew that my 2:24 wasn't going to sell more shoes or create a media sensation thus, my market value was nil and the money wasn't coming. I was merely good at the local level. Nothing more.
Some guys did benefit from "shamatuerism" but most runners like Phil Copess, Don Norman, and Pat Peterson got some free gear but still had to punch the clock each day. If you can get some financial help, more power to you. But a race isn't lame just because they don't offer money or comp you. You just have little or no market value to them.
