I have an old pair of shoes with 1/2-inch sheet metal screw drilled into the soles. They provide decent traction, though nothing is perfect. Matt Carpenter has a description of how to do it on his Web site.
As to hands, I find a second, mitten-type layer is a big plus, even if it's just thin wind-resistant fabric.
Face - Get a hat with a partial face-mask attached. It protects the neck, chin, and up to the nose if you need it. For exposed face parts not able to be covered, you'd be amazed what a thin layer of Vaseline will do.
I survived a run at -80 windchill one night in Chicago in January of 1983. Wrapped my face in a scarf, wore oven mitts on my hands, and wore a red, white and blue Athletics West jumpsuit.Remember those? My son won't wear my old jumpsuit, maybe I'll try e-bay...
My record is around -20F.
Had a good face of ice after the run, much like the people in the above pictures.
Anyone who runs indoors when the temperature starts to drop is a Pansy.
Funny. I coach high school and I've had mothers call to tell me that we shouldn't practice outside when it:
1. is too hot
2. is too cold
3. is raining
4. is snowing
5. is foggy
6. MIGHT thunder and lightening
7. There is a big test coming up.
If I listened, we would have practice about once a week!
