Why not Cal Poly?? They are one of the best state schools in the nation (in terms of an education) and have a great program (coached by Mark Conover) and always seem to come in around 11th every year. Plus it is on the central coast of California, I do not understand why more people dont go to this school.

Because Mark Conover is there
While I'll give you Bauhs is fast and will be even faster, Chico is not a "perennial xc power house". If you can't beat the top three (WSC,ASC, and ACU) DII teams you are not a power house. Those three teams on some of their best years are maybe a 7-12 team at DI's. Probably the best in recent years would have been the '03 Adams team and on their best day probably would have finished somewhere between 5-7 at DI's that year.
Now, again, if you can't beat those three teams, you are not a powerhouse. You may have a good coach, and some fast runners, but that does not make you a good team nor a powerhouse.[/quote]
This debate is purely academic on my part, as I know the kids on the team could give a rats ass if someone on letsrun doesn't think they are "powerhouse". With that said, I would respectfully disagree with your assertion that Chico doesn't meet the criteria for being a "perennial xc powerhouse".
I know people on here hate to give credit where credit is due, but Chico's stats speak for themselves. The men have been in the top 4 at NCAA's, 4 of out of the last 5 years in a row. The women have been top 4 at NCAA's, 3 out of the last 5 years.
On top of that, they've faired well against competition outside of their division (Sundodger, Willamette, Stanford), and consistently outpeform programs with better recruits and better funding. I think that meets the definition for "perennial".
I don't know why you chose 'top 3' as the be all end all criteria for powerhouse. If you aren't in the top 3 at nationals every year then you aren't a powerhouse or a good team?
Seems kind of arbitrary to me. By that criteria you could rule out 99% of teams in the NCAA who are good year in and year out but are not top 3.

too cold for him gringo.
Okay, so Chico is a perennial contender at DII NCAAs. The point is that Fernandez just shattered a very respectable state record, looks set to win Footlockers, and arguably could be the nation's top recruit this year. Basically any option he desires will be open to him, including the top tier DI schools, so why the fvck would he go to Chico?
Why go to Dartmouth?
Because its one of the best schools in the world.
Why go to Chico?
Well, I don't really know why you would go to Chico....
My guess is German heads to Colorado, Oregon or Wisconsin.
Running the time he ran completely changes the game for him. I mean, thats probably one of the top 5-10 distances performaces ever for an American high schooler. So who has enough money for a full ride?

No, I think you are wrong. Arguably the "best" coach is the most accurate description of coach Lananna. If he is able to continue recruiting top FL athletes, I might even be willing to say that he is the "best" recruiter.
It's no secret that his assistants do most of the one on one personal coaching.

OK, I'll bite. How 'bout getting a good education, living in a great place, and running for a good program without paying 30k a year in tuition for starters.
I don't think the point is Chico vs. Dartmouth. Dartmouth is obviously an awesome school in many respects, and it's not really fair to compare the two. Dartmouth is an elite academic institution with an average (by DI standards) XC crew. Chico St. is a medium/small sized state school with a good XC crew (by DII standards). Generally they serve different populations. That doesn't make Chico a bad choice.
With that said, I don't really see German going to Chico or Dartmouth now that he is going to be offered the sky by every major program out there.
Rob Conner NEEDS to recruit this kid. He is the only kid in the country who can fill the void when Moore and Kilburg graduate. German can make an immediate impact at Portland and a better education than some Pac 10 school that forgets that their athletes are students too.
Kinsella (8th NCAA XC, All American 10k) would have a great training partner in German.
not to beat this to death (I'm bored at the moment), but prior to lighting the world on fire at State, German was actually a reasonable (albeit high level) recruit for Chico.
He was a high quality CA kid who was flying a bit under the radar on the national scene (relative to his abilities). Coach Towne is very good at identifying these types of kids and recruiting them before they become huge.
I'm not suggesting that Conover, Dolan, Louie Q, and a few others weren't drooling over him already, but I think now he'll be getting lots of calls from the Schumacher, Lannana, Wetmore, types.

ok somebody has to say it... German Fernandez is definitely 20+ years old
I suspect the same, and as soon as he pulls a Cabada or ends up at a JUCO, we'll know that he couldn't get past the Gestapo known as the NCAA clearinghouse...
i was talking with german at a race recently, and he told me that he verbally committed to texas with a full ride and is no longer considering any other schools

Are you serious? He doesn't look that old and is actually a young for his grade

Prior to the 2007 season, in a Dyestat interview, his coach says Fernandez "runs 6 days a week under coach's supervision. As his CC coach I can say he works very hard. I have to hold him back. He is a team player first and loves all sports. I have purposely kept his mileage low, as he is still only 16. He has slowly developed a passion for running. Needless to say he already has the competitive spirit that a champion athlete needs."
The results for a February half marathon, which occurred prior to the above interview, have his age at 17, which I would assume they got off an entry form.
And his girlfriend is a college sophomore at CSU Eastbay.
So, yeah... I'm serious. I have doubts about his claimed age. Back when I was in high school, I experienced first-hand two individuals, both Hispanic, who entered high school competition as freshman when I was a senior and I had been racing them in age group races for 3-4 years. It happens.
Eastbay has a CSU campus? I thought they just did sporting goods?
Southeastern University.
why the fvck would McDougal go to Liberty? people have their reasons. they don't have your reasons.
Fernandez at Texas? That would be interesting. Looks like Texas will be graduating a lot of their top runners, so it looks like they kind of need to start recruiting some talent. In that one workout though that they showed on flotrack, their coach(I forget his name) didn't do that great of a job of holding his athletes back as they were supposed to run 3 x 2000m @ 5:50-6:00 but let them run the last one in 5:30's and the second one in 5:40's. Then they didn't run up to par at nationals(not that one workout makes that huge of a difference, but i wonder if the other workouts went like that). And Fernandez is definitely the kind of person who will need to have the reigns pulled pack, seeing as how he likes to push it to the limit whenever he can.

I apologize - I shouldn't have included Cal Poly in my statement.
To the other poster defending Chico. Sure, they have a good program. But the are DII! Why would one of if not the best prep runner in the nation go to a DII school?!? That's absurd anyway you look at it.
