Renato is not being honest. Either that or he's not as bright as he's trying to appear. EPO does help athletes, especially elite athletes. A 2 - 5% difference in performance is massive at the World Class level, and a lot of guys have improved so greatly in such short time, that no one except the most naive and foolish could believe it's all clean. Like the guy said above, you don't see a lot of Europeans running as fast as they did 20 and 30 years ago because the Europeans have given up the sport in large numbers. Very few natural athletes can keep up with drug filled E. Africans, and in the 5 and 10, it's doubtful any drug free athlete can compete at the top tier at all. It's been said before, Lagat and Chepchumba are the tip of the iceberg. It started with Rosa, then Hermens, MacDonald and others soon got into the act. The Africans have training locations conducive to avoiding sudden spot tests, and populations that will willingly injest any drug that will give them an edge, and help them possibly live like a king in their backward lands. The crap with the E. Africans and drugs has been going on for over 15 years, and finally some cracks are starting to appear. So out come the defenders, the mythmakers.
This 'innovator' constantly brings up people like Ryun, etc. Yep, those guys had talent. And were drug free. They'd make an impact today, if they ended up in the sport. Given the mindset today of most Americans and Europeans, they more likely wouldn't even give the sport a thought, or they'd run for awhile, and then realize they can't run with juiced athletes. With today's training and equipment, etc, say Ryun was clocking 3:27 or 3:45, which he could probably have done back in the day, clean, with proper coaching. As fast as that is, he'd still be losing to doped up athletes, some with less talent, no doubt.
Yeah, Eliud is a teenager. Cherono is clean. Bekele is clean. Geb is clean. The lies go on and on.
