95% of you would do the same in O’Keefe’s position. She has been training her whole life for this moment. Especially if her livelihood (bonus) depends on her being an official Olympian. McClain didn’t earn that spot. Fiona did.

She’s certainly earned a lot of negative attention
I know one thing: there's A LOT of people that now will not like O'Keefe. Lisa of respect. Selfish of her.
Don’t pretend you wouldn’t do the same in her position, especially if a much needed bonus for being an official Olympian was on the line. McClain did not earn that spot.

No, I wouldn’t. Completely embarrassing yourself on international television is something I would not do, nor would I dream of lining up for a marathon when I can’t even jog a mile. Selfish, selfish move. This gets her the bonus, and is going to ruin her chance at ever getting another contract. The thing to do would have been to drop out and try to negotiate something in good faith with your sponsor.
That's pretty sad for everyone involved. I've seen athletes turn up and jog it in - Chris Thomson in the 10k back in 2012, and Steph Twell in Tokyo - but they actually finished and there's some honour in performing even if you're well below your best. To not even go through 5k says to me that the injury is severe enough that you shouldn't start. I can't imagine you feel good about calling yourself an Olympian if you complete less than 20% of your event.
