He clearly hit the back of his head (hard) on the track. I didn't see a fencing response but it reminded me a lot of Tua's big injury (his likely 2nd in 1 week)
No he didn't. But I agree there's could be a small chance of a spinal injury.
The video is very clear and fact that he's still unconscious an hour and a indicates he definitely took a blow to the head.
WRT: Lequipe reporting he has regained consciousness!! If someone has access to full article please repost.
Lamecha Girma conscious after his big fall in the 3,000m steeplechase final
Lamecha Girma fell at the end of the race. (S. Lecocq/Reuters)
The 3,000m steeplechase world record holder fell heavily on Wednesday evening at the start of the last 200m. Unconscious on the track, then evacuated by stretcher, he has since regained consciousness before being transferred to hospital for examinations.

Linking the video following confirmation he's regained consciousness. His head does not touch the track. Why do people argue win the face of such incontrovertible proof?

That was one of the most scariest track accident I have seen. He hit his trailing knee when he started the kick and accelerated. That must have hurt really really bad. The steeple is also really heavy unlike a hurdle. This can result in a very serious or life long injury

I've had a similar fall only I was able to roll forward and pop up immediatly (still with a 20m lead). An ugly reminder what can happen in the steeplechase.
I've seen a guy do a face plant into a barrier right in front of me. Again not something you won't forget.

My flat 3000 pr is basically your 3000 steeple but the steeple is the only race I’ve dnf’ed out of fear of injury. If you’re not well prepared (first race of season) and you’re in the latter half, the barriers look 10 feet tall
The 23-year-old, who is the 3,000m steeplechase world record holder, was stretched off of the track after passing out right in the thick of the event, worrying fans in the process on Wednesday.
It is believed that Girma has now regained consciousness as he was able to utter a few words before being transferred to hospital for examinations, according to French outlet L'Equipe.
I watched a video of the NBC coverage posted to X and viewed it a few frames at a time. Girma's trailing knee hits the barrier and the impact spins his body in a clockwise direction. When he hits the track, the impact appears to be a little bit north of his shoulder blades. The head doesn't snap back but the brunt of the blow appears to be at the base of his neck. His body goes limp at impact and the momentum rolls him to a resting position. The spine isn't very robust at that point in the chain.
That's an excellent description of what happened. It was preceded by some hand fighting with El Bakkali and desperation to reach the barrier before him. Girma had an Ethiopian teammate just to his left. I think the cramped conditions and sense of urgency caused the trail leg to hit the barrier.
Something that people should remember is that you can suffer a serious or traumatic brain injury without taking a blow to the head. Sudden deceleration can also cause the brain to, for lack of a better term, slosh around inside of the cranium. In my opinion, that's what happened with Girma. The force of the impact at his shoulders was so great and the stop so sudden that his brain literally bounced inside of the skull. This is what happens with Shaken Baby Syndrome - the brain moves around and impacts the inside of the cranium causing physical damage to the brain's tissue.
