Cranny ran up on Tanaka with 400m to go. Should have been looking for a way out of the box since Tanaka was the slowest of that group. Hopefully her tactics improve for the Final.
Crazy how uneven the two heats are. The second heat only has two athletes (Beatrice Chebet and Medina Eisa) ranked in the top 15. Unfortunate for Nozomi Tanaka, who would’ve certainly qualified out of the second heat.
Why is it not split based on ranking? That seems silly.
I'm pretty shocked at how Cranny got left in the dust in the last 200. Hopefully she was just cruising once she realized Tanaka wasn't coming back.
I don’t think so. Four of the six women who beat her have run, what, 14:14 down to 14:00? And the two others were Kipkemboi, a silver medalist, and Battocletti who just won the double at Euros in dominant fashion.
The margins to get both Americans through were extremely thin, and they made it. I was sure Schweizer was fated for 9th with 600m to go. Tough for Nozomi Tanaka who’s a great runner and would surely have qualified from the 2nd, weaker heat.

Well, from a pure entertainment value the imbalance made for a real tense race in heat 1.
Hassan looked better than I expected. Maybe news of her demise as a medal contender on the track are premature?
