Last I checked, it appeared Keith was doing just the 5, Battocletti was doing both the 5 & 10, and DvanES is doing just the 5. Can someone please clarify this?
I believe it's the opposite, that Keith and Van Es are only doing the 10,000.
I don't think Great Britain has anyone going at 5000. Maureen Koster is entered at 5000 for the Netherlands. She dropped out during the Monaco 5000 today, saying it was too humid for her. I wasn't overly impressed with that.
Sorry, I’m shocked I wrote Keith was doing just the 5 instead of the 10, because I thought she was doing just the 10 when I wrote it.
The Netherlands is scheduled to compete at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris from 26 July to 11 August 2024. Dutch athletes have appeared in every edition of the Summer Olympic Games except for two occasions: the 1904 Summer...
At the PreClassic, I think the top East Africans closed in ~62.x.
In today’s 5000m race in Monaco, the winner closed in 60.0, and:
Tanaka in 61.4,
Battocletti in 61.6,
Kelati in 65.4.
In the Paris Olympics 10000m, it will behoove Kelati to get at least 5secs ahead of Battocletti at the bell; the latter will have already raced the 5000m, whereas, Kelati will be fresh.
I’ve never seen Valby close any race faster than 66, which suggests she will at least need to be a couple of seconds ahead of Kelati at the bell.
An important factor in this race will be the temperature and conditions at race time. Parker has an advantage if the conditions are hot and humid. Apparently, she will be headed to Switzerland for some training before the games. Although this is likely not enough time to determine if she is a big altitude responder, the mountain location will be a positive mental training experience.
Expect Great Things!!!

There is not going to be a group of 2nd tier runners, doing their own pace in the Olympic 10000m. What happens if the field would otherwise go out in 16:00, like last year’s WC 10000m? Would Kelati and Valby’s group take it out in 15:20? They wouldn’t belong in the front and would look foolish. It doesn’t matter if someone from that group finishes 10th or 12th, or who out-kicks who. No one will even be watching.
This Valby stuff is so over the top. For the U.S. runners, from the 1500m to 10000m, she is probably the least competitive. Nico Young is the same age, and far more competitive, but there has been zero speculation on LR about how he might do in Paris.

Duh. No offense, but why do you think she's called the PEOPLE'S CHAMPION? It's because she is the champion regardless of what place she comes in. Get it?

There’s no Young Mania, and the thread would go nowhere. He has no chance of medaling, anyway, so it would be kind of dumb.
Does about 50 fans really make her the PEOPLE’S CHAMPION? If she wasn’t good looking, would anyone even care?

You keep mentioning Nico and the lack of speculation, so why not start a discussion on how he might do in Paris?
Exactly. His comment was idiotic on multiple points. Of course the placing and finishing times are important to the participants and fans, regardless of where they place. Worrying about “looking foolish” in race strategy is stupid.
Keith seems to be a grinder, like Valby, and she wasn’t afraid to take the lead at 3000m when she set her 14:43 PB in Shanghai. She seemed to even-split that race, running 70.6s average 400s. I’m not sure Valby can close faster than 66; how fast is Keith?
I'll admit I'm a bit of a fanboy. I like watching her race, pretty much over any other event. However, those races were to see if she could win and in what crazy manner she tries. I'm still really looking forward to her Olympic 10k, but it will be a bit less exciting just to see if she can be top American and maybe make the top 10 if she has a great day. Parker vs Hassan will be fun to watch as well if Hassan tries to run every event at the olympics. May be reaching on that one.

Keith finished the EuroChamps 10000m (in warm conditions) in 31:05, an average pace of 74.6s/400m. She closed in 75/74. Battocletti closed it in 70/65; Diane van Es closed in 72/69.
At the ‘Night of the 10000m PB’s’, racing tactically in a 31:03 finish, Keith closed in 74/70.
In her 30:37 PB at ‘The TEN’ earlier this year, in nice conditions, Keith closed in 71.4, Kelati in 68.9, Lauren Ryan (who is doubling in Paris, like Schweizer) in 67.6, Schweizer in 67.8.

Unless you buy a ticket, you won’t be watching them race and Hassan, because of her past successes, will try to keep up with the top runners at a pace that doesn’t make sense for Valby.
Can you identify an Olympic or WC race where what you guys are predicting has happened, which is that a group of runners far slower than top ones, ignore everyone and run their own time trial?
