Did you watch the 10K at the Olympic trials? Fisher, Young, and Hunter were all pretty much milers or like 1500/3000 guys. Most high school stars train as 1500/3000 guys because those are the only events to run and then move up when they get to college. It is a very natural progression and there are countless examples.

All three of them won NXN. or FL. Nico ran 4:07 for 1600m, and is not now, or ever will be, a 1500m runner. The three are all strength runners, and are 5/10 athletes. They all had to maximize their strength and the training for them was 1600/5000m, and not 1500/3000m.
Okay, probably not in high school. More college or early in their pro career. I kind of assume that most kids who are superstars in the mile are actually going to be future 10k stars. The future milers are excelling in the 800m, or even lower.
Same thing. Who went from being a superstar in the 1500m/mile to being a star at 10k?

even further out:
Rod Dixon: 1972 Olympic 1500 Bronze
1983 NYC marathon win
1984 Olympic marathon 10th
That’s one guy, but the poster I responded to, made it sound as if it happens all the time:
“ The classic progression is a 1500m star in high school or college who has maxed out their speed and moved up to 5000m/10,000m. Or ditto for 5000m/10,000m up to the marathon.”
Of course, it’s natural for a 5/10 guy to move up to the marathon.
No, Bolt's coach wanted him to be a 400 meter runner, Bolt wanted to focus on the 100 and 200.
Bolt WAS a 400m runner.
U20 and U17 Carifta champ over 400m
CAC champ over 400m
Former Jamaican high school record holder over 400m
Yes but Bolt believed he was a sprinter while his coaches thought he'd be a better 400 meter runner. Glenn Mills told him he'd let him do the 100 if he set a Jamaican record in the 200. Once he did Bolt showed him that he is indeed a 100/200 runner. I guess he did move down but that was before he became a senior athlete.
1996 Olympic champion Vebjorn Rodal moved from the 10000 to the 800.
Cliff West 1500 to 200 meters
Apocryphal as confirmed by Cliff himself. Cliff was a Golden West mile champ in the 1970s. Ran at Berkley. In 1977 or 78 was credited with a 20.4 200m in Italy, a meet he attended, running part of 4×400 team for the USA, but didn't run. Which is good enough story on its own. HS mile champ to national team 400m.
