Hull has consistently been top 8 in the world, making world finals. She ran a 4:15 mile last year which is equal to 3:56.
Most of her PR's previously had been her going out way too hard and then barely finishing. She's always been really close to popping off a crazy time. She is more fit this year and she had the perfect pacing in the perfect weather on the perfect track.
She ran most of those times under one of the worst professional coaches in the world, Pete Julian. She’s been back home in Australia which is a much better environment and has a better coach. Then you add the Olympic bump. Leaving Pete was probably worth 4 seconds.
She ran with a coach who has succeeded with multiple stars, surrounded by and racing incredible talent, and ran a PB almost every year with him.
It does seem as if going back to Australia has helped.
How are out-of-competition doping tests in Australia? How many times has she been tested in 2024? (This is all public with USADA; does Australia do the same.)
Pay attention. Read the original post more carefully if you need to.
Her season's best from 2023 was 3:57.
Have you watched the race? Reminded me of when Jakob dragged Nuguse to 3:43 mile. She had a pacer the whole race, big jumps can happen in that case
I watched the race live online, yes.
It was like all of Hull's DL races: fast-paced, with great runners out front for her to hang with. She has been dragged to several high 3:5x performances just like this, but never once had the ability to hang with the winner in a single one of those races.
And today she hung with 3:50.
(Also, that wasn't a five-second jump for Nuguse.)

"Olympic bump" indeed.
She’s coached by her Dad now. She has been improving since she got back to Aus. In her post race interview she says she’s not missed a day’s training and hit everything her Dad has asked her to do. She’s just straight down from St Moritz.
using the general rule of "1500 time = 2 x 800 time" this means Jess should have about 1:55 800 speed
her pr before this season was 2:03.78, now 1:59.99, but clearly she's much faster than that
this race, just like the men's 800, saw the top 8 all get PBs, but also had 10 of the top 12 with PBs. 1 WR, 4 NRs. 5th place and 8th place both had 4 second PBs, while Hull's was 5 seconds.
what a meet. WRs in the women's 1500 and women's HJ, prob close to a dozen new NRs, multiple dozens of new PBs.

1. Nobody is saying she was a scrub. She has made exactly two world finals in her life, placing seventh in both. She is an incredible athlete, but has never shown world-beating ability. Her PB as of two months ago was a great 3:57, run in June 2023
2. She is 27 and has raced in perhaps 20+ Diamond League races, correct? The idea that she is suddenly just now pacing it right in 2024, with a 6+ second benefit, is not credible.
