Mcsweyn has two 3.31 results in the qualifying period which is more than can be said for anyone else either in the team or who was vying for a spot. He finished 7th in the last olympics (which should be considered 6th due the banned scum bag katir finishing in front of him). And he was a finalist the following year in the world champs when the likes of Hoare got eliminated in the preliminaries. It was only in last year's world champs where he underperformed. He absolutely deserves his spot.
I get what you’re saying, but Katir only ran the 5000m in Tokyo. Also Stewy’s progression in global 1500m finals has been getting worse and worse. 7th in Tokyo 2021 in 3:31, 9th in Oregon 2022 in 3:33, and didn’t even make it out of the heats in 3:38 last year. Like others have mentioned, McSweyn is far more likely to find success at the 5000m in this stage of his career, it’s better to be a 12:56 5K guy with 3:52 mile speed this year than a low 3:3x 1500m guy with no kick.
If you’re taking best performances across qualifying period I don’t think the decision is too controversial. But it’s pretty clear that Stewy is not the same and I think Cam has a much better shot at making the final. My prediction is Stewy won’t make it out of the heats….
I think that’s most people’s opinion. Repeat of last year.
