What do you know? Why irresponsibly imply on this forum? Dorian is a good dude. 10 years is ridiculous. The Caribbean community within the NCAA do the best to navigate life in the US, away from home, perhaps leaving hardships behind, trying to get an education. He’s a person.
Okay, I am a college coach. This situation happened multiple time with my athletes. All I did was donate the money to my program, and get a tax write off for it, and then use the donated money to help the athlete. It was all done above board with permission from the AD. Each year I would donate 10% of my salary(no I am not Moron) to my program to use for the benefit of the athletes. Yes, Dorian is a nice guy but pretty dam dumb if you ask me. He could have easily found a better way.
Of course he deserves to be fired/banned…That's like asking if drunk driving should be legal just because so many people get away with it.
I agree that asking the athlete to lie about it is a bannable offense but I don’t see it as being like drunk driving; who was going to get hurt here? It sounds like the coach was in a difficult spot where they wanted to help an athlete in a difficult position and couldn’t see a way to do it within the rules. I think the lesson here is you can’t solve every problem and sometimes when you try you just make things worse.
One solution would be for schools to have emergency funds available for situations like this, but I can easily see how they don’t want to open that can of worms (students have enough debt as it is).
Of course he deserves to be fired/banned. How is this even a question? Not only did he violate the rules, but asked the athlete to lie about it. I don't know or care how many other NCAA coaches are doing similar. That's like asking if drunk driving should be legal just because so many people get away with it.
On point. Excellent analogy. Because helping someone is exactly like drunk driving. If only everyone could see the world with your black and white lens.
A normal student is usually paying out of pocket for college whereas athletes get scholarships. Is that hard to comprehend? One successful paying student can bring in more money for the school over the years than a half decent athlete.
i dont know much about ncaa rules but lending someone money to be able to eat is pretty awesome. so is helping someone to visit their family thats far away.
i remember back in college not having the money to go home for christmas one year, nor my parents did either. that christmas alone at school f'n sucked.
