The diots here didn't realize that Parker graduated a year early. There is so much hate on kids who are old for their grade. Parker started college at age 17 and graduated college in 4 years. Her development is easily explained now that everyone knows that she should have been a high school senior when she was a freshman in college. She has so much upside being only 21.
Skipped a grade? Most people in my area start college at 17 if they have a Sep/Oct/Nov/Dec birthday.
In my state...
When I was growing up the cut off date was Nov. 1. Since then they've changed it to Sept. 1. My birthday is Sept. 2. As it was... I was one of the younger kids in my class. Now I would have had to wait another year and I would have been the oldest kid in the class.
Parker's Birthday is Sept. 27th. But I don't know what state she lived in when she started school.

Thank you for providing that. It sounds like you are one of the knowledgeable ones.
This topic comes up frequently here and I am amazed at how many people have no idea what the cutoff is. I have asked people in the workplace and they have the same confusion. Many have told me that they were 17 at graduation but then they do the math and realize that they turned 18 during the school year.

I'm also a September birthday and some of my classmates were born in January of the same calendar year and December of the calendar year. One of my sons has an early January birthday and was classmates with kids who were born in late December of the same year. It is my understanding that in NYC the calendar year determines your grade. He just completed his freshmen year and almost every public school classmate of his was born in 2005. The exceptions are immigrants and kids who for whatever reason reclassified. He turned 18 in HS, half his friends turned 18 in their 1st semester of college.
I'm not aware of cutoff days and rules from other states, my experience as a parent and coach in NY is that you turn 18 in the spring semester of your HS senior year or fall semester of your college freshmen year.
I have a niece in Florida with a late September birth date who will turn 18 early her senior year in a few months. She is very sharp and I've always felt bad for her that she's older than her classmates. My dad was a lifelong teacher. He said it was not ideal for the girls to be older because they mature faster mentally and physically. Dad said when he taught middle school there were always far more girls than boys in his classes who could have handled being a year beyond where they were.
I've never said any of this to my niece. She's doing great and zeroing in on her top choices for college. The later start date probably helped my sister with saving money to help finance.

Really? In my area no one starts college at 17 if they’re born then.
Where I gerw up (suburbs of major east coast city) it'd be relatively common to have a 18 year old junior with an april or may birthday (for example, if born in April 2000, he'd be high school class of 2019)
I think it's because parents want their kids to have any edge they can get, and being 1 year older can help massively for athletic recruiting or doing better in classes
September 27, 2002, currently 21 and graduated from UF, graduated from East Lake presumably at 17 in 2020 during COVID. If she started kindergarten in 2007, which would fit, then she was 4 at the start of school and turned 5 a month or nearly two later, then she was young for her grade by a month, because ordinarily, you start kindergarten at age 5. The oldest kids in the grade would turn six in September just after the start of the year. But she is only about a month younger than the typical youngest kids in the grade. That does give a sizable advantage to the oldest kids in the grade over her, a full year and almost four weeks. That advantage runs through sports and academics, so she has a bit more time to improve than your typical college graduate.
What state, CT? 95% of the states have an Aug 1 or Sep 1 cutoff so she was in the wrong grade in 95% of states.
I don't know about each state's policies but in NY there isn't an Aug 1 or Sep 1 cutoff. A January 2002 birthday and Dec 2002 birthday are in the same grade. Many parents choose to reclassify their kids that are born late in the year but there's not a cutoff as you stated. Jan-June kids graduate at 18 and July-Dec kids graduate at 17.
december kids are in the next grade. have to turn 5 by the end of NOvember in NY.
have been teaching in NY for 18 years and am a December bday myself.
INteresting info i just found. NYC is Dec 31. the rest of the state is Dec 1

Ok. I understand now, didnt realize there's a difference between NYC and other areas of the state. I have a friend in LI with twins born in Dec 2004, a month older than my Jan 2005 son, who were a grade older. I guess they were put a grade ahead, like Valby in Florida.
But again most of the seniors I've coached were either 17 or turned 18 in the Spring. The exceptions were the immigrants who often were held back to better learn English.

Yes, this is the NYC public school policy. NOT NY state. Born any time in 2006? Go to NYC public school? You're just graduating high school.
Long Island is different. Upstate New York is different. Private schools in NYC can also be different depending on parent preference.
I started College at age 16 as Classes started in August and my Birthday is September 14th, I was in a School called the Guidance Center for kids who were kicked out of The Normal Kids School (Fighting in my case) Edison in Huntington Beach, CA Eve when I was in the Schools For Normal Kids, I was ALWAYS in Special Education Classes, for kids who were Dumb Or Had Behavior Problems, With Me it was Behahior Problems, So I was in 11th Grade and they kept giving me test's I Knew in my Head from 3rd Grade What is 5 x5, 6 x 6 etc, So I Skipped Class as it was a Waste of Time, My Teacher called and said you can Test out, Which I did and I Graduated in March (Not June) while in the 11th Grade. So It worked out great, I only had 1 Fight in College (Not on the Campus, and it was not with a college student) I played Sports the Whole Time in College Orange Coast Cross Country and Track And Wrestling and Cross Country at Oklahoma State, And ALL 3 At Cal State Bakersfield, Just busy, Busy, Busy I loved it I also went To The Boxing Club during The Summer and got to Spar with Fighters who fought on Showtime, HBO, ESPN, CBS and ABC. Loved it all, Sports saved me from Suicide or Jail. Everybody should be on One Of The Schools Sports Teams you make friends, get pushed hard, have a busy schedule (As the Saying goes not doing anything is the Devils Workshop or something like that) Your teamates invite you to Church, The Coach tells you to go to the Tutor Center to get grades up and make sure you stay eligible, And The Tutor Center is for Athletes only so it is all positive, You get to Travel with Friends (Teammates)
You have no idea what you’re talking about. NY and NJ allow you to begin school with a birthday in September or October. Parents hold their children back from starting school so their child will achieve more academically and excel in sports. My daughter has an August birthday (we live in Tampa). She was always the youngest in every grade. I blame insecure parents living vicariously through their children. Parker didn’t skip a grade 😂

There was another thread just like this about how the cutoff should be July 1. I have a September birthday, just like Valby, and I graduated HS and entered college at 17 just as she did.
It's not rare, but it's also not ideal. I should've graduated the year after I actually did at 18, and so should have Valby. But oh well. She just happens to be younger for her grade. Doesn't mean she skipped one.
