If you watch the video Rose holds her line in the middle of lane 1 from off the turn and Kate Grace runs into her... Where the entire straight away there was no room to do it. Clearly should have been a DQ.. track official seriously don't care about the rules and it ends up effecting finals because athletes are willing to impede other runners since no one is ever called on it.
There was room. Rose had to shut one door or another and she chose neither.
Explain to me how Kate Grace ever gets around Rose without making contact.
Top 3 for a semi doesn't make sense when there are 9 lanes and 3 semis - because I think they want one lane open just in case something happens in one of the semis and they want to advance a runner.
I also like the idea of a couple qualifiers on time. Wasn't it this set of 800s where two semis were "slow" and one was "fast"? One would think that time qualifying would help keep the pace honest, especially in the last semi where the competitors know exactly what it takes to make the final: Top 2 or 3rd/4th under X:XX time.
Regardless of my view of this situation, perhaps there shouldn't be any infield equipment quite so close to the track unless absolutely necessary. This could have been a much worse outcome! And we see lunges at the line often enough that something bad can eventually happen.
You realize the rule as is stands is top 2 each heat and next 3 fastest. If they advance a runner it will be 10 athletes under 3x3Q or 3x2Q +3q. Your point would work if they had 8 going in as a default, but they do not.
The qualifiers on time thing only works if you really care about "honest" racing in an 800 or think that something like that would have an impact. I don't think there's anything notably honest about a frontrunner dragging opportunistic runners to fast times that give them a greater chance to qualify than athletes who are randomly in a heat without someone like Rose. It happened in the 1500 semis too. I also don't think Rose/Nuguse ran fast from the front because of the time qualifiers. That's just how they run. So, I'd go for the fairness and simplicity of 3 semis of 3 qualifiers for the 800 and 2 semis of 6 qualifiers for the 1500. For sprints it is different.

Just like how USADA doesn't care about anti doping rules.
This question is simple, from about 80m to go until 20 or 30m to go Rose is on the very outside of lane 1 and there is room to pass on the inside. At the end Rose drifts inward and then takes a step farther in which causes the contact.
And it’s very clear if you look where Rose’s feet are in the video especially the slo motion part, Rose’s left foot is dead center in the lane whereas a few seconds earlier it was within inches of the outside line, she moved in almost 2 feet.
Not saying Rose should be DQd or anything but I don’t see why people think Grace did anything wrong.

You’re reaching. Rose drifted inward marginally and it was within the rules and smart racing to close off/discourage the inside pass. Grace wasn’t close to her at that point so she wasn’t cutting her off. There is no rule you run in an exact straight line. There’s also no rule that Grace can’t try to sneak in so what she did was fine, though would’ve been iffy for her had their finishing order mattered.
As others have mentioned, would've never happened had Rose not given up her spot on the rail. I've said it before and I will say it again: never give up the rail. The rail is a spot you've earned by virtue of being ahead of anyone chasing. This is rookie racing 101 and yet we still see it every year at the highest levels. Make anyone trying to run you down do so from the outside - always.

Simply put, many runners wouldn’t have attempted what Kate Grace did IMO. It was a tough situation as she would’ve had to go around Mu and Rose if she wanted to make a pass without carnage. In that moment she was desperate for the top 2 and qualifying time. The move got her both. But Rose did NOT give up the rail completely. Grace had to take a good bit of contact to make the pass and there wasn’t enough space really. So this is not a textbook example of giving up the inside stupidly. She did protect it pretty well and Kate Grace fell into the infield and hit a dang scoreboard.
Let's say Rose had hugged the rail and Grace went to pass her on the outside (inside of Mu) and contacted her right arm propelling her off the track. What would the call then be? I think the no call for what happened was right as it did not affect Rose moving on. A grace DQ would have moved Southerland on, right? Would that be the right call? But if it was the final, I say DQ for Grace to give Rose 2nd.
i think we're overlooking how much of this is protest-driven. and there was no protest, likely because rose was the first little-q, 3rd seed, from an insane heat. my sense the officials tend to call stuff that is either obvious n' nasty or like a false start. to me this kind of judgment call stuff is more coach protests and no one made one.
and to me rose is between situations for someone to make that protest. LSU's coach might handle it in college. US coach might do it at the olympics if she makes it. here, to me, it's like, is it worth it? your athlete is through and you might need more decisive help in a final. why waste it on a stretch in a semi you made it out of.

Well, there is USATF rule 163 #3: "Each competitor shall run in a direct line after entering the final straightaway in all races of two or more turns unless there is another competitor in his/her path."

Not saying Rose should be DQd or anything but I don’t see why people think Grace did anything wrong.
I don’t agree with this description based on the video I linked.

Ok here are the screenshots. This is about 30m from the finish line, Rose's left foot is almost on the line.
This is one step from the finish line, Rose's left foot is in the middle of the lane.
