It seems like she does the cycling as part of her routine because she was already cycling a lot, and liked it. Also, she'd gotten burned out and injured a lot when she was racing frequently and running high mileage in the NCAA.
So when does Valby run 800? Tell us about the distance runners excelling on 35mpw.
Point is if Valby can excel in 5k and 10k on 25-35 a week, than Hodginkson can certainly excel at the 8 on 35
That isn't the point. The equivalent of sprint training that works for an 800 specialist like Hodgkinson doesn't work for distance runners. It will be something else.
Peter Snell used to do up to 100 MPW, with long runs up to 21 miles.
800-1500 runner. His coach believed working on his strength and endurance, to run successive rounds in competition, was more important than focusing on speed.
It is the point. Shorter distance requires more speed training amd less total miles. More miles for shorter distance males no sense. You really don't understand training at all.

There is no comparison between Hodgkinson and Valby as runners. They specialise in completely different events.

Incorrect. Marathon and shot put are completely different events. Steeple and discus are completely different. 5k and 800 are pretty close when comparing the dozens of track and field events. Training is 80-90% in common. Shot put and discus training would overlap about 5% with the 5k. You really don't understand the sport.
"I’d say I almost train like a sprinter, but I think the 800m is getting towards that now. There’s a whole new science – a whole new perspective – on 800m training that says you actually need the speed, and it’s not about doing miles and miles."
"a whole new perspective"? lol People have trained the 800 like it was a sprint since the 70s. 800 folks might be running faster 400 times nowadays, but this is far from anything new.
Another point that hasn’t really been mentioned yet is that 800 training tends to be very periodized. It’s really hard to sustain training at the intensity of mid-late season 800 workouts while also keeping mileage high. It’s not uncommon to see 800 specialists put in a “high” mileage base (here meaning 50+ mpw, not the 70+ mpw you’ll see from some 15/5k types) in the off-season and then cut down to the 30-40 mpw range as racing and sharpening starts.
Anyway it’s already been said a dozen times here but further reiterating that 35 mpw is completely normal for an elite half-miler (and is almost certainly the highest mileage any of the top 3 women’s 800 runners are doing at the moment).

But who's hotter? This is the question I am struggling with.

You're embarrassing yourself if you think there is any similarity between the 800 and 5k and what it takes to run them. Hodgkinson herself says she trains more like a sprinter. So is that "no kick" Valby?

35mpw+crosstraining isn't particularly low volume for a pure 800m runner. Given that she's prone to stress reactions, this is probably a way to reach an approximate equivalent of 50-55mpw of aerobic conditioning without the added stress to the system. There's not really many examples of truly successful 800 runners who were much higher than that whilst in season, very few reached above 70mpw certainly anyway. She isn't really low volume at all, this is more in line with the narrative of cross training being adequete replacement for some easy miles if it helps you stay healthy.
