That's funny, I was there this past Weekend (HS coach) and saw the thread title and instantly knew which athlete it was. Admittedly my first thought when I saw the race was "that doesn't look like a girl", which I felt bad for at the time, now not as much.
It's unfortunate and there's not really a good solution at this point. It's unfair for these biological girls to have to compete against biological males. there is a distinct difference unless someone undergoes rigorous HRT at a young age (which can be questionable) so it's foolish to try to erase the idea of a biological sex, a scientific proof and fact. But it also seems a bit unfair to make these athletes perform as something they're not, which can also be problematic. So, unfortunately there isn't a perfect solution. I don't think however that the athletes should be able to switch divisions almost at will, at least in the Male -> female direction, or records will lose meaning when they are broken. And in this case I don't think it was fair, 55 gets you to sub regional but no further, maybe the slowest leg on the 4x4 in WA, where I coach. But as a girl, You win state. Huge difference, and it's obvious this athlete has an advantage, taking away medals and points from others. Maybe changing the categories to something like "XX" and "XY" could affirm these people without using the language they dislike? Either way I think it's gone too far and we need a solution before it gets even worse. Curious to read through Others thoughts on a solution.
