Yeah that 1sec gap between Nuguse and Kerr/Jakob isn't because he can't run with them physically. his 3.43.9 is still miles better than Kerr's 3:45.2 yesterday for instance. But, I do believe that there is an effect of the two egomaniacs on performance. They are so self-confident/arrogant, and so dedicated to the task of besting each other, that they carry clear
Decades ago, Daley Thompson was asked by an interviewer about his 400 time goal in a major decathlon. He said "45.9" in a deadpan way. Interviewer said, wait, what... Daley patiently explained to the interviewer he could say 47.2 and likely achieve it, and stay within the bounds of belief, but that by setting his mental frame at 45.9 he was stimulating himself to visualize every step of that race at that pace, to push at it from the inside. He stated that it was better to claim 45.9 and run 46.7 than claim 47.2 and run....47.2....
OK personality is different... Daley declared these goals openly for self-motivation whereas Jakob for instance never declares a time goal, it's all title-driven. But the idea is the same and there's a common thread here. Goals are set, Jakob openly claims to want to be the best of all time, he states two Oly golds at 15 and 5 as an interim goal - which is a very difficult double only achieved by Nurmi and ElG let me remind all you LRBF - but this is only a stepping stone to his monumental vision.
Meantime Josh focuses like a laser on beating Jakob knowing that by doing so, his own time/title goals will be achieved in the process of defeating Jakob and this is his way of laserfocusing.
When Yared is interviewed on this topic, he mouths platitudes "Room for improvement, work for next year, we'll see, I'll work to get closer" etc. etc.
Yared seems a pleasant, likeable dude. A great neighbor/buddy/co-worker. But not a World or Olympic champ.
