BREAKING: Gustavus senior and all-conference track athlete Tyler Smith has elected to forgo his remaining eligibility and will not run for the Gusties next fall or spring. The news has been kept under wraps for around two months in order to not scare recruits away. The reasoning: Smith has declared for the NBA Draft. A four-year varsity guard in high school, Smith's decision has paid off, as earlier this afternoon, he was drafted 33rd overall by the Milwaukee Bucks. Smith will now go from being teammates with Mark Rud to being teammates with Giannis Antetokounmpo. This is undoubtedly the most impressive achievement that any MIAC runner has accomplished over the last week.
As for the Gustie men, they will be without their starting point guard for intramural games and will likely be killing most of their intramural squad in order to invoke a disaster draft. Oh and the Gusties might struggle more in track I guess.
Strange things have happened to the Gusties in back-to-back years that have shaken up the MIAC, so I'm sure I'll be back next year to post about Nick Brauer's 700k NIL deal from Saint Thomas (or something weird like that).
